Default Universal 2012

I was at AFM today and spoke to a friend at Universal UK So I thought perfect person to get some answers! I asked:

Jaws and he said June 2012. He also said ET around the same time. ......Also he said To Kill a Mockingbird for sure. These may only be UK dates but for things like Jaws am sure would be the same date.

I did say about how up and down Universals transfers are. He said they have titles that are they call "expedited" titles which are films that need to be put on Blu ray quickly so they have no time to do any restoration. Like American Graffiti he agreed was a great example. He said that the US was going to release "Quadrophenia" as Pete Townsend is touring so need it ready quick. The UK probably wont as its an anniversary of the film next year or something. He did say that they will be putting a lot of titles onto Blu in the next 18 months and they are conscious of the price.

Anyway thats my bit of Gossip!

At least they confirm what a terrible job they typically do.

While I'm not one of those who dislikes the American Graffiti disc, I'd love to know the logic behind this comment. They "need" to get AG on blu "quickly" so there was "no time to do any restoration"?

Wut?

Hopefully King Kong Vs Godzilla. Even though it'll only be the American Edit.

And, incidentally, Universal can have my first born if they'd just put the HD-DVD transfer of Streets of Fire on blu. Pretty please?

AFM is the American Film Market. I have a film being sold there. One of the bigger sale events of the year before Berlin and Cannes. I did ask about "The Sting" one of my favorite films. He said it had been restored but no release info yet!

Best

I laughed at this.

And good to see To Kill a Mockingbird and Jaws are in the middle of the year, rather than later. Hope they do well with them!

I would think that’s more Paramount than Universal.

I do recall Bill Hunt saying that he’d heard Universal was doing a proper restoration job on the Universal Monster films. I think I’d only want The Wolf Man, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein.

Jaws and E.T. I'm hoping turns out alright, especially if Spielberg supervised the HD remastering. I'm also on board for To Kill a Mockingbird.

so, uh, which are the ones that aren't expedited? Universal hasn't done a proper restoration, at least in the digital realm, even once in blu-ray's life...

I hope Universal considers:

Airport (1970)
Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)
The Best Little *****house in Texas (1982)
Bird on a Wire (1990)
The Birds (1963)
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Far and Away (1992)
Flower Drum Song (1961)
Harvey (1950)
Jaws (1975)
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)
On Golden Pond (1981)
Patch Adams (1998)
Schindler's List (1993)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Soldier Blue (1970)
The Sting (1973)
Sweet Charity (1969)
Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967)
To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
The War Wagon (1967)
Xanadu (1980)

As well as some of the titles previously mentioned, I hope Universal will get around to releasing the following titles in 2012:

The Good Shepherd
Breach
Far From Heaven
Gosford Park
Missing
The Beguiled
Play Misty For Me
Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here

These titles are probably not considered to be big box-office winners so maybe Criterion will be able to license some of them.

As far as the older classics are concerned, Vertigo and Double Indemnity would be top of my list.

A splendid time is guaranteed for all! Considering there was a fairly recent DVD release (2005) I could see them putting this out on BD eventually. If not next year then maybe for its 35th anniversary in 2013. Think I will pull out my DVD and give it a spin this week!

Jaws coming out late May early June has made sense forever I thought it was going to come out in 2011 during that time. Also we should expect the American Pie films someting in March/April right before the theatrical release of American Wedding.. I just hope we get Sudden Death and A Bronx Tale in 2012

Ya im thinking March, around the time when the scream series was released last year. Im wondering if they will be sold seperatly, or in a pack. And i would love if they included those free ticket things for "reunion"
