I just stumbled across this. Never heard of it before.

Stop motion from some of the same folks that made Coraline.

A misunderstood boy who can speak with the dead, takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.

I've seen a few trailers for this around and about, it seems like it could be good, but I don't get why only horror based animated films need to be in stop motion

I don't think it would work for other types of films. Imagination Toy Story or Up in stop motion. I just can't picture those type of films being in stop motion. Stop motion just has a weird, scary kind of quality IMO.

Not to mention the Aardman films, which also lack any sort of creepy factor. Anyway, I'm so glad we're getting three big stop-motion films this year!

Really looking forward to Laika's ParaNorman and Aardman's Pirates, and to a lesser degree, Disney/Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. This is gonna be a great year for animation in general, especially compared to last year, which was lackluster at best.

They arent SCARY though. And stop motion has been used for all genres for nearly 90 years.

Well no of course they aren't SCARY, but they are creepy looking and I don't think they translate very well into other genres apart from the more horror based type of movies.

speaking of Aardman - I heard the planned 'Shaun the Sheep' feature length film is in limbo ...

Paranorman is a good Halloween movie, and I really enjoyed the first half which focused heavily on the main character and his sidekick, but the second half spent way too much screen time on his older sister and the older brother, diluting the fun of the first half's style and storytelling.
The 3D was pretty weak though I hate to say except for the first half. Not nearly as strong as Avatar 3D (October 2012 blu ray 3d release).

Otherwise, the audience I saw it with was clapping at the end if that says anything. Also, the adults were laughing more than the kids.

The surprise 'revelation' by the jock, towards the end of the movie...

Really can't believe they are pushing this agenda in a childrens movie.

Yeah, all mentions of homosexuality should be strenuously repressed before it poisons the minds of our youth...

So in a kids movie full of zombies and a storyline revolving around a murdered little girl, people are up and arms about their kids getting upset by a gay character??

I don't want to live on this planet any more.

As I sat in the theater watching this, I kept asking myself "Why am I not enjoying this more?"

It had great visuals, an excellent score, the story wasnt the freshest thing in the world, but it was fine, the voice acting was good, some crazy cool characters, kiddy and adult humor, and some terrific messages to boot.

Not sure if its me or the film, but we just didnt click, and I cant point to anything "wrong" with the movie. Dunno.

Check it out though because you may dig it.

I'll give it a 3/5

Just saw this this afternoon and loved it. Now I'm going to have to go back and check out Coraline, which I never saw.

It's playing in theaters right now, and I really wanted to see this, since the zombie characters on the posters I saw looked very appealing to me (love the character design), but it's only playing in 3-D, so I'll just wait for the 2-D BD release. I hate when they try to force you to see the 3-D version.
There is NO other option. Well, they can eat my shorts.
No money from me then.

Eidt: I have Coraline on BD, which didn't do much for me the first time around, but it grew on me, and now I am pretty fond of it.
I love stop motion, but I have to say: Mary and Max is still the most beautifully crafted stop motion film I have ever seen.
It's drop dead gorgeous.

I finally saw this today. I really liked it. I'd put it about on par with Coraline, so yeah, definitely a great film. Needless to say, the visuals were gorgeous. (But I already knew that going into the film.)

And I know different creators were working on the film, but I was surprised at how different the tone was from Coraline. While they both went for the (mostly) family-friendly horror/supernatural genre, that's pretty much where the similarities ended. I felt ParaNorman was less creepy than Coraline, despite Norman going all-out with the zombies and ghost creatures. It was definitely more campy and comedy-oriented, which worked really well. There was a good balance of comedy, suspense/action, and heart. And for the most part, I thought they got the message across really well--they didn't beat the audience over the head with it, though I felt that a couple of the moments bordered on 'after school special' territory.

Also, great soundtrack! I was thinking how great it was during the film--seeing that it was by Jon Brion in the credits definitely explained it.

I think we can definitely expect more great things from Laika in the future. Can't wait for their next feature.
