We take a look at the firsy HD DVD player on the market, the Toshiba HD-XA1 HD DVD player priced at $799. Should you spend your money? Read on!

Quote from our review:

"Ten years after the first DVD player wowed us, the next generation of DVD is hitting stores. This time there’s a choice: HD DVD, supported by Toshiba, Microsoft and Thomson; and Blu-ray Disc, backed by Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer, Sharp and Philips. LG, for one, has said it might support both.

With single-disc DVD players ringing up at Target for $39 a pop, it’s no wonder the industry is pushing the next big thing in video. But for many consumers who are content with their existing libraries of video discs, DVD fills their need. These are likely the same people who are satisfied with their analog or EDTVs and haven’t caught on to the wonders of HDTV.

Ok, some of you own one of these HD-DVD players, so give us the rundown at this point.

With the firmwares and everything...how are the glithes and bugaboos these days now? Honestly?

Althought I don't own the HD-A1, we have it up and running in our hometheatre experience pod at BB. We have updated the firmware twice and are now on 1.4

the HDMI hanshake issues seem to be gone now. Speed has improved, but it's still about half as slow as the samsung. The player still doesn't remember where you where if you hit stop, and the audio occasionally drops out still (or doesn't match lips) Also, the included remote control seems less responsive than the Harmony we programmed to it.

Can you (and others) be more specific about this?

When people have complained about this situation, has it been the audio coming out of the display or audio via digital or analog to the AVR, or all of the above?

Most likely through a reciever or seperates of some sort. Used to happen with the Samsung dlps.

Is there a quick summary as to what the extra $300 gets you?

What are the key differences between this unit and the A1?
