United Kingdom The Lodger (Alfred Hitchcock) 24th September Pre-order

The Lodger Blu-ray REVIEW

Released 24th of September

One of the film-making industry's greatest auteurs, Alfred Hitchcock undoubtedly earned his title as "The Master of Suspense", with his thrilling films loved by the viewing public over a career spanning many decades. Widely regarded as the first true "Hitchcock film", The Lodger is a masterclass in tension, displaying all the trademarks of what was to become known as the typical Hitchcock thriller. Newly restored in High Definition, this release features a brand new orchestral soundtrack by acclaimed musician and composer Nitin Sawhney, performed by the world famous London Symphony Orchestra.

On hearing reports of the seventh murder by "The Avenger", Daisy decides to stay with her parents. She is being courted by Joe, a detective, who gets suspicious when her mother rents a room out to a lodger - to whom Daisy is attracted. While the lodger is out Joe takes the opportunity to search his room - there he finds a gun, press clippings of the killings and a map of the murders...

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • 2 Disc Soundtrack CD by Nitin Sawhney and the LSO
  • Image Gallery (HD)
  • Commemorative Booklet by Hitchcock scholar Professor Neil Sinyard

Weird. I watched a an interview with Hitchcock today and he talked about this. It was the first time I'd ever heard of it.

We're certainly being spoiled this year in regards to Hitchcock on Blu-ray, aren't we? Thanks for posting!

The extras seem slim compared to say, the US Fox release on DVD, (Audio commentary, making of, radio adaptation, etc)

What's with Hitchcock and September? It's not like it's his birthday...

The BFI is staging a major celebration of him in the Summer (the biggest ever seen), so the other studios are presumably basing their releases around that. The Lodger disc is actually derived from a major new restoration of the film produced in conjunction with the BFI's event.

Do you have a link with the screening venues?
I doubt they'll be one in Leeds though...

I don't have a link, its best to check with local venue. It's not showing in Leeds, BUT I do know that it's screening nearby in Bradford, so you're in luck!

There's just been a pretty good article on the re-release of The Lodger and it's new score with an interview with Nitin Sawhney on the Channel 4 News.

For those in the UK who missed it you can catch it on the Channel 4+1 channel in just under an hour!

There's an interesting article here about The Lodger. It's written by the chap who supervised my MA dissertation.

I'm going to see the restored version of the film in Bradford. Can't wait to see how this one has turned out.

It wouldn't be the first time that a company took advantage of a recent restoration to put out a old transfer. like Warner and Clockwork Orange.
The score (that's advertised so boldly) was commissioned for the new restoration, if you needed any more evidence.

I don't normally complain about cover art but boy, that is cluttered with text.

And of course the eternal question: Will it be region-free?

I'm getting it either way, but I hope someone else like BFI or Studio Canal releases a box set with the 9 silent restorations.

I think this release makes it unlikely a box set will resurface. ITV/Network have the rights to The Pleasure Garden, The Lodger, Easy Virtue and Downhill (and presumably The Mountain Eagle in the very small chance it ever resurfaces). Studio Canal have the rights to The Ring, Champagne, The Farmer's Wife, The Manxman and Blackmail.

I find it strange that Network didn't release a box set.
