Hong Kong Importing a PS3 (power voltage)

Does anyone have any experience with using an imported PS3 console? To explain, I'm interested in picking up an Asia region PS3 to use here where I live (US). I know I'd have to get the firmware from their Asia website and that my movies would be incompatible, however my main concern is the power.

Using an Asian PS3 in the States, what would I have to do in order to use it without risk of blowing it up lol. Would I need a voltage converter? Or just swap the power plug with one from a US PS3? I've heard a number of different answers, but none seemed very confident. I'd like to hear statements from people who have done this firsthand, if there are any...

Do NOT use the US power plug. You will need a 110V to 220V step up transformer. Unless you can find a competent electrician to swap the power unit out.

I don't think thats true unless Sony has recently changed its stance on PSU's.

The fat PS3's use the exact same internal transformer and they can switch between 110-220. I am in the UK and have a 60gb US PS3 which runs fine on 220 even though it was designed for a 110v territory. Its been going 4 years now with no problems.

When the first slims came out, I heard from many websites they also used switching transformers that could handle both 110-220.

If this is still the case, you can just use your own countries power lead.

Everything I've ever heard is that the PS3 has universal power supply built in. I recently imported a PS3 slim from the US (to Europe) and it worked with no trouble.
