Default How much did you pay for your First BD player

I was cleaning some papers out and ran on my receipt for my first BD player. It was a PC unit (I always tried each new format in PC form first - to include HD-DVD and Blu-ray) and I paid $189.00 in 2007.

You want to know the good thing....I'm still using the same drive today!!!!

Chime in and lets see how prices have fallen, (I buy drives for other machines or builds for $36-49 bucks now).

£250 for a Samsung back in 2008, but it came with I Am Legend and Ocean's 13 so it wasn't all bad.

Didnt pay anything for my old Sony N460. It came as a bundle with my tv from BB. I did pay $250 for my S570 almost 2 years ago and it has been worth every penny.

My first Blu-ray player was a 60 GB PS3 in 2007 for $500, which also included Memento and a PS3 remote. My first standalone Blu-ray player was a Sony S350 in 2008 for $260.

Launch PS3 cost me $650 + tax + mandatory 2 game purchase here in Canada.

So... roughly about $850.

My first BD player was the first one commercially available, the Sony BDP-S1. It was $1000. Loading a disc was slower than molasses (e.g. it took about 10 minutes to load the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie). The player had a tendency to freeze while playing a disc, and then had to be rebooted, disc reinserted, and the process repeated. The BDP-S1 was an expensive, frustrating, not-ready-for-prime-time piece of hardware.

60gig PS3 during the first price reduction I believe, $499.99 in 2007. It came with a choice of 6 free blurays too, IIRC.

Same here. It now resides in a box at the bottom of my closet.

In December of 2008 I paid $299 for my Panasonic BD-35. It is still in service in my son's bedroom, as my Panny BD-80 now resides in the home theater. Gotta say it has been worth every penny. It's almost more than I can bear to watch a dvd now.

Ah the dark days of blu-ray. Back when almost all the criticism was pretty much deserved.

Did you end up keeping it?

I still have it in my vintage equipment cabinet. It isn't plugged in, but it looks great!

Why didn't you just buy a PS3? They were less then a grand and worked really well. I think some people claimed the PS3 was actually the best Bluray player of 2007.

My first Blu ray player was a 60GB PS3 in February of 2007.
It was a gift but, I think it cost $600 at that time. It caught the Yellow Light of Death last summer and I had it replaced with a PS3 Slim for my birthday. So I guess I have yet to purchase a blu ray player but, I would like to get a nice stand alone for under $200.

I allowed myself to be persuaded by a salesman, who was "my friend". My brother bought the PS3 at about the same time and never had an issue with it. I always seem to be at the front of the line when it comes to buying new A/V technology. The instance with the BDP-S1 was similar to most: paying the most I could for the least performance, or for unfinished/developmental products. Hindsight being 20/20, I should also have waited to buy some BD titles that were not at the top of my wish list and saved a few grand in the process - but that's another story.

I paid $399 for a 40 gb PS3 from Walmart back in 2008. It was on special and I got a $100 gift card back with it, and bought more Blu's with it. I later upgraded the HD to 500 gigs. I also have a Toshiba HD-A35 for HD DVD's purchased around the same time.

In 2010 I purchased a Sony BDS-360 from a guy on Craigslist for $100. It was still sealed in the box. I bricked it doing a firmware update and took it back to HH Gregg and they gave me a new one, as the original owner got it there. It's starting to show its age, and sometimes it will not boot a disc, so an upgrade is in my future.

I'm probably gonna bite the bullet and get the Oppo 103, and sell the PS3.
