Default Red Dawn ('84) October 9, 2012 release

Red Dawn Blu-ray

Mods feel free to move this to the Wish List if necessary!

Couldn't find an existing Red Dawn thread, so I figured I'd start one.
Well the remake is due in theaters this November, and now UK has the original up for preorder, AND it's been OTA HD for quite some time.
With all that, I can't help but feel encouraged that we will be getting a US annoucement soon!

2012 remake via IMDB:

UK BD due Nov 5th:

I hope it's coming. It had a release date in 2007 and then it was postponed indefinitely because of the remake.

Makes since to see the original released prior to the remake. I'm curious how good/bad the new version will be since it was actually filmed 3 yrs ago and shelved.........

I wouldn't think that would be the case since Fox is handling MGM's catalog titles at this point.

I'm pretty sure this will be the same 2007 era film scan on a BD-25 with the MPEG-2 codec. On the plus side, the early Fox/MGM releases are free of DNR and look pretty good overall, even if they're a bit soft. I've seen the MPEG-2 HDTV broadcast of this movie and it looked very film-like with intact grain, and a decent amount of detail. I am assuming they will use the same scan, so overall I think people will enjoy it.

Well, took a look at this disc earlier today, and overall, I'm most pleased . "Red Dawn" has never looked or sounded this good, at least on home-video, and this is a nice, though not substantial, improvement over the already strong R1 C.E. 2-Disc DVD. Colors and contrast look perfect, the grain is there, the image is sharp and clear, and there's no evidence whatsoever of any digital tinkering (perhaps to a fault, as there are plenty of screen-pops to go around ). However, I will say I'd much rather have this film the way we do right now, than have had this transfer remastered and possibly "butchered" the way that some catalog releases have been.

Now, just one thing that puzzles me. Once again, there's some variation in the pre-set subtitles on this Blu compared to even the most recent R1 2-disc C.E. DVD. Also, it should be noted that the "theatrically burned-in" subs can be completely turned off on this release (as they could with the original 1998 DVD), but could not on the 2007 DVD. As for the differences I noticed, it's nothing major, but in the scene where Strelnikov is discussing the body count with his fellow Colonel after the gunship attack on the Wolverines (at about 1:39:00 of the film), his comrade finishes their discussion saying "What do you think?" (Blu-ray & original 1998 DVD release), instead of "Why do you think they are so cruel?" (2007 C.E. DVD and original VHS release). I'm not sure what the exact theatrical burn-ins said, since I didn't see this in the theater, but my gut leads me to believe it was probably "Why do you think they are so cruel?" since that was on the original VHS tape I had from the 1980's. However, if you look at the Russian Colonel when he's speaking, he delivers so little dialog in that statement, it seems to make more sense that he's simply saying "What do you think?" (as it would also make more sense for that particular scene in general). Anyway, if anyone can speak or translate Russian, it would be nice to know what exactly that line was...

I love this movie, and never grow tired of it, it's a shame it was deemed necessary to do a remake. Any fan of this film is doing themself a great disservice by opting to bypass this release.

And I'm still interested in knowing who those two guys are at the far right of the frame starting at 13:55 of the Blu, and disappearing within a couple of seconds (they were also visible on C.E. DVD)...anyone?

Yes, verified in regards to the multiple audio tracks. Usually, this means the disc is region-free, though I also do not have a different region player to test it. Even if this isn't region-free, it means that this is the transfer that TCF/MGM will be releasing worldwide.

For anyone interested: here's a nice comparison from caps-a-holic...granted, it's comparing the Blu to the older Region-B DVD release, but still, just to show how nice the film really does look in HD :

The side of the case was crushed and I could hear all the discs bits inside when I shook it.
