I'm really glad to see the Godzilla films hitting blu-ray in America. This is great news. Hopefully it will be descent release. All the Godzilla films have been remastered in very high quality HD in Japan already. They aired them in HD on tv in Japan, and I think they are on blu-ray already over there unless I'm mistaken. Does anybody know if this uses the Japanese HD remaster?

The only way I and I assume plenty others will buy this is if it features the original Japanese language track with accurate subs (re: not dubtitles!). Hopefully Echo Bridge take this into account.

How have we still not had a decent edition of King Kong vs Godzilla? It's one of the more well known G films and yet you can still only see it dubbed.

From that article:

There are a lot of films and discs that don’t even get a second thought about them here. We just churn them out and no one thinks about it.
Really? I never would have guessed. Where was this guy to save all the other crappy releases they put out?

The rights are owned by too many different studios so there would be no way to get a ultimate set.

That is unless Toho comes out with a pricey, non-English subtitled, Japanese release set in the future. Even if such the "ultimate set" were possible, no way would they risk customers importing outside Japan and releasing films that have yet not come out domestically.

On side note regarding Godzilla Blu Rays, I'm amazed Megalon is getting release soon. That movie has been in Public Domain for such a long, long, long time. I'll never forget the many craptacular DVD releases the came for the film where VHS excelled in quality.

Megalon is only coming to DVD. It wasn't just Godzilla Vs Megalon that was PD, it was Godzilla Vs The Smog Monster as well. The reason was due to the fact that copyright renewals were needed by the American studios. AIP was the studio that handled Smog Monster and just a ton of their titles went PD because the length of copyrights kept changing; back in the 60's it was only like 28 years for a copyright and now in present day, it's over 100 years. There's something called the Uruguay Act that gave power back to the original studio who made films and that's why rights were back in control by Toho. Also, that's why you don't see copies of the Sonny Chiba film The Street Fighter any more.

For now anyway and it will be barebones but they also want to get a blu out later that has features. Of course this is Media Blasters so we'll be lucky if we even see the DVD release.

The original single release is now out of print but you can still find the disc in this region 4 Godzilla boxset:

Also includes:

Godzilla: All Monsters Attack (Godzilla's Revenge)
Godzilla vs Hedorah (Smog Monster)
Godzilla vs Gigan
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Terror of Mechagodzilla

All include English and Japanese versions with accurate subs, excluding Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla which has semi-accurate dubtitles.

I've completely forgotten about the R4 Australian DVDs. They very neat and high in quality. Too bad they were in PAL format, something I have come to realize bothers me.

Well that sucks! Jeez man, I was so looking forward to it too. I didn't know that about Smog Monster, though. I also noticed that some Godzilla movies have their own corresponding American versions, as well as International dubs, produced by Toho themselves, I believed.

So does this mean there is a possibility that GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER could be released on blu-ray?!?:

C'mon Echo Bridge! You know you wanna do it! Do it for the children!

None of the Godzilla movies were ever public domain. Some were only believed to be public domain. As soon as A.I.P.'s rights lapsed to certain Godzilla movies, or in the case of Cinema Shares with Godzilla On Monster Island (Earth Destruction Command: Godzilla vs. Gigan), Godzilla vs. Megalon, and Godzilla vs. the Bionic Monster (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Godzilla vs. the Cosmic Monster), those rights immediately reverted back to Toho Company, Ltd.

Many bargain basement distributors, however, either thought the rights were public domain or they just pretended they were, leading to many unauthorized "public domain" video releases of Godzilla vs. Megalon back in the 1980's into most of the 1990's. It was only until about 1998 when Toho was finally able make the legalities of Godzilla vs. Megalon crystal clear to the market and stamp out all the unauthorized videos, leading to Anchor Bay putting out the only authorized North American VHS of the movie in existence.

Unfortunately, Anchor Bay's authorized release was the same beat up, heavily edited print first put out by Cinema Shares theatrically in the U.S.A. and subsequently reused by all the "public domain" videos. If Media Blasters' North American region 1 Godzilla vs. Megalon DVD does actually see the light of day on August 14th, it will be the first ever authorized edition of the uncut movie in both Japanese and English formats.

So no, this does not mean that Godzilla vs. Hedorah (Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster) will see a Blu-ray release soon. The North American rights to that movie are still with Sony; however, the bargain basement distributor Mill Creek recently made a licensing deal to distribute about 250 of Sony's titles. It's not known yet whether Sony's Godzilla titles fall under this deal.
