Quote:
Anolis Entertaiment has finally set a date for the long-rumoured special edition of the Technicolor film "The Thief of Bagdad / The Thief of Baghdad" [GB, 1940, Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell, Tim Whelan, Alexander Korda (uncredited), Zoltan Korda (uncredited), William Cameron Menzies (uncredited)]. DVD and Blu-ray editions are available on 15 November in 2012 in the trade.More information, unfortunately, are not yet available.
Note : The Thief of Bagdad is also due in France this Fall.I thik it's pretty safe to assume that Criterion upgrade will follow soon.

I bought the Criterion DVD a few months ago and now I wish I'd have waited. The film looks great on DVD, but it must be fantastic on a well done blu-ray.

Yes, one can only hope for an Criterion upgrade because the additional material on the DVD is excellent (on a second disc), far superior to what the German edition offers.
  • Two audio commentaries: one featuring renowned directors Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, and one with film and music historian Bruce Eder
  • Visual Effects, a documentary about the technical achievements of The Thief of Bagdad, featuring interviews with special-effects masters Ray Harryhausen, Dennis Muren, and Craig Barron
  • The Lion Has Wings (1940), Alexander Korda’s propaganda film for the English war effort, created when The Thief of Bagdad went into production hiatus
  • Excerpts from codirector Michael Powell’s audio dictations for his autobiography
  • Excerpts from a 1976 radio interview with composer Miklos Rózsa
  • Stills gallery featuring rare images of the film’s production and photos shot in Dufaycolor * Optional music and effects track
  • Theatrical trailer
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring new essays by film scholars Andrew Moor and Ian Christie

I also hope for a UK release (it's a British film after all)

looking to get this on a (good) blu-ray soon... and region A playable. Just watched the blu of Arabian nights last night and it was gorgeous... classic case of "get a good print and make a blu-ray" with minimal processing... just gorgeous film like beauty. Now I want every Sabu adventure in my library on blu.

btw just ordered a region free blu-ray from Spain I saw for sale on ebay. will report back when it arrives and I can evaluate (saw an amazon review saying good things about the Italian blu-ray in terms of PQ but that's unavailable anywhere at the moment... so hoping the Spanish version is similar)...
