I never thought we'd ever see Life on Earth get a Blu-Ray release! Great news! David Attenborough is one of my heroes and his reply to my fan mail is one of my most precious possessions.

This is excellent news. It is a shame however, that, knowing the BBC, they will have mastered these at 1080/50i as they did with Civilisation. I wish they would master their shot on film material in 1080p23.976.

I will buy them regardless. Life on Earth has never even been released on DVD in the USA.

EDIT: And neither, it seems, has The Trials of Life!

I've been wondering if there will be a US/UK release of First Life.

According to the BVA site, one of these (I forget which one, and the site is down as of this post) is merely a best moments compilation running at 150 minutes, although considering the pricing, it's not all that surprising.

These two were fully restored from the original negatives so the £10.50 each I paid in the Christmas sale lightning deals was a very good price.

No sign of the BBC restoring any others yet.

Got LoE and had a quick comparison with the first episode from my DVD set - outstanding improvement in picture quality, like you wouldn't believe! Is this really 16mm? I find hard to believe that after seeing the bluray.

The only setback of the bluray edition is the lacklustre case. I'm tempted to simply switch discs and keep the beatiful cardboard box of the DVD release.

Finally got the chance to take a look at these, and I must agree with previous posters, the quality on both sets is fantastic and very filmlike. At just over £10 each from Amazon they're an absolute steal, and I can only hope that when it arrives The Blue Planet will look similarly great.

I'm posting some random screenshots from the early episodes, first Life on Earth (1979):

And Trials of Life (1990):

Hi Guys

Can anyone with the set please confirm the length of the episodes? They're supposed to be 50mins each but I heard rumours they had been cut down to 30mins each?

I grabbed Trials of Life pretty cheap from a seller on eBay. Don't suppose anybody has a slipcover for it they'd be willing to part with?

True enough, I'll post something up for that. These two are Attenborough titles.

Nah, it's alright. Sir David's done so many "Life" series, it's understandable
