Disney Atlantis: The Lost Empire / Atlantis: Milo's Return (2001-2003)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire / Atlantis: Milo's Return Blu-ray

Found this on the full release calendar on DisneyDVD.com. Looks like March 12th is going to be a VERY busy day. I will probably buy this because the animation is FANTASTIC. However, I'm not a huge fan of the actual film.

Hopefully it's as good as the dvd, as that's the only Disney "Collector's Edition" that I don't have!

Only buying this b/c of the HD transfer. I own the CE and I'm sure 99.99% those special features are not even going to make it on blu-ray.

Still waiting for Tarzan and Hercules blu-rays. Glad that HOND finally is going to be release on blu-ray.

Well, nice witty creative thread-crap , but yes, to keep from anyone shooting the messenger, the thing's a pretty sad mess. One of those movies where you're a half hour in waiting for the story to "start".

(Not their fault, though, just they didn't have enough production time or budget to do the story the directors wanted to do--So they had to quickly fill time by spending large portions of the first half showing us what unsympathetic nutcases and bullies the rest of the mission crew were. )

Wow, if this is correct then it's great news. Where are we getting BB and HoND from? Has a specific released date been given for those titles?

Dolby Digital 5.1? Disappointing. No DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD

Could be just a temporary placeholder until the full specs are listed/determined.

I think they are referring to the made for TV movie, not the main feature. I dug this movie, I just think it needed several rewrites to kick the kinks out of the story, which ultimately makes no sense (it bothers me when characters suddenly deduce how to defeat a villain by using a mystical object, with no firm set up, like Indy and Mola Ram). And Mole doesn't work, and that campfire scene sounds like an amateur radio play.

Which suggests they may be doing the 1+2 version, they just haven't perfected the press announcement yet.
(Or in the same way as the new Hunchback cover, where it simply says "2-Movie collection", and doesn't give the sequel characters half-and-half equal time.)

The lack of plot (with at least three major action scenes having to be cut for production time) meant that Disney had to fill by selling the marketable supporting characters, and you simply didn't WANT to spend time with this mean group of nutzoids.
(I remember watching the Doc, and the Roz communications officer, and thinking, "Okay, am I supposed to want to meet any of these characters at Disneyland? " They actually did have suit characters of Mole and Vinny at the parks for a while, in addition to the human ones of Milo & Kida, but...not for long.)

As for "Working the kinks out", have to admit, I didn't like Lilo & Stitch when it came out either for the same "Needs a second draft" reason (who the heck's story was it?--The sister's??), but I later warmed to the characters with the TV show. Not as "good" as the movie, perhaps, but at least I knew who the characters were and why.
And for the same reason, Disney's attempt to do a Gargoyles-action TV spinoff series of Atlantis in the "Milo's Return" vidquel actually improves the characters by working them into the story from the beginning and giving them something to do--Even Mole's unappealing oddballery is toned down, and he comes off as actually knowing his subject...whatever it was.
I know I keep harping on the Atlantis vidquel as a reason to watch "good" DTV's, but what do we have to do, Ernie, make it a wager? Try it, for me, and see if it doesn't spark up those "What was wrong with Atlantis" arguments, in a "Yeah, THIS was what I went in hoping to see!" sort of way.

They're leaving out most of the features from the 2-disc DVD? Why would they do that? I'm hoping this is just preliminary incomplete information. Even Treasure Planet had all of its features except for the galleries ported over.

Edit: I'm guessing 'The Making of Atlantis' is a collection of all the features from the second disc of the DVD collector's edition. I'm sure the audio commentary will be included too.

Cool

So it looks like the Disney site is actually the only one reporting that this is coming out, so here's hoping! I can't wait to add it to my collection if it does. Here is the cover art from Disney's site as of today.

My top 5 worst Disney movies currently are (5 being least awful, 1 worst)

5. Fun and Fancy Free
4. Make Mine Music
3. Dinosaur
2. Home on the Range
1. Chicken Little
personally I'd move Home on the Range to number 1.
