I've never been inclined to collect.
Those of you who do collect BD's and have DVD collections, what is the motivation? Do you watch many of these more than once? I rent about 99.9% of what I watch and only buy rare things that I know I want to see more than once in a few years. Many things I see more than once are so far apart that buying them on one medium would leave with something obsolete by the next time I wanted to see it. I know those with children may collect Disneys and such, since kids often like to watch movies over and over and over and over. It's sort of like collecting books, which I don't do either. The serious book collecters I do know only collect those expected to increase in value. Home movies are not likely to do the same. I'm not bashing anyone; I don't find anything wrong with it. I just get the motivation behind it. |

I dont consider myself a collector, never collected dvds except those for my son to watch. However, now i do find myself buying (not collecting) blu-rays, I dont expect to get anything out them except my enjoyment. I have no problem watching movies more than once so its not a problem. Its nice to have movies around when you have visitors you can always pop in a movie and show off your home theater.

I only buy movies if it's something that I'll watch more than once.

jsteinhauer I think that you are exactly the kind of customer that Microsoft has in mind for their movie download service. I have thought all along that it will compete more with rentals than with high def disc sales. I've had video on demand with cable for years and have never used it. I like owning movies that I am fond of.

I am just an avid movie fan. I love movies. So I collect movies like someone would collect comics or stamps. I might buy a movie knowing I'm not going to watch it anytime soon, but If I wanted to I could, cause I'll have it. Sometimes I'll but a movie based on an actor or director or writer I really enjoy.

I've got about 250 DVD's and 50 Blu's
Most of my DVD's come from sales, I watch the sale ads and bargin bins for BB, CC, and WalMart... typically you can find great movies for $4 - $5. And the Thanksgiving sale ads last year had a bunch of movies for just $2. I don't expect anything to appreciate in value, but $5 is a good value for a 20million dollar production. As far as blu-ray's, sales can knock down the prices to $10 to $20 each. I enjoy my humble little home theatre, so good blu movies are a bargain. I also rather disgust going to the movie theatres. It'll cost $15 to $20 a head for the ticket and snacks, the floors are sticky, can't pause it, there's always talkers, the chairs will never be as comfortable as my own couch, etc. etc. So I can justify paying a fair price to add to my collection rather than paying the premium at the theatre or see a butchered version on cable. |

I wish I knew...it is something I got from my father and can't shake. I grew up watching lots of classic 40's and 50's films on 16mm that he collected/traded at conventions. Then I watched as he built up a massive collection of VHS movies - you name it, we had it. Before Blockbuster, we could have easily started our own store
- interlude here, my dad had the idea of 'renting' movies to people through a store in the late 70's, but my family told him he was crazy. Silly idea, who would ever support it? - Anyway - of course, the death of VHS meant the re-start of the collection on DVD. Now he's on the fence about starting up with High Definition discs. From all that - I got started collectiing as soon as I exited college. A few years ago I finally stopped buying DVD's - seeing the Netflix was such a better answer - and that downloaded video was the future. I saw the useless VHS tapes lining my bookshelves that I couldn't give away, and decided I wasn't going any further with DVD (unless it was a critical title that I would watch over and over). And then...Blu-Ray. Damn - the addiction is back. Now I buy a movie if it is on sale fro a great price, not if I'm going to really want it as a keeper. I look over at the 8-10 titles I have on the shelf still in the wrapping and start to think long and hard about this one again... ![]() |

I used to rent alot during the days of VHS. But what I found was that the cost of the movie to buy sometimes ended up cheaper or the same than the follwing added up:
1) cost of gas to & from video store 2) My time going to and from video store 3) late fee's i almost always incurred or the damn rewind fee 4) rental fee + membershop fee. 5) quaity of rental media, skips...stutters, etc. filthy tapes with bad tracking that would damage my machine. 6) wear on my machine from playing poor quality tapes. By the time i got to an age where I even considered wanting to sit down and watch a movie (usually with that special someone ![]() Fortunately my VHS collection only ever reached about 30 or so titles before I was introduced to by a friend DVD in 1999. The Matrix was the first movie I ever saw on DVD and I had never seen it theatrically. He had a nice Denon Hometheater in the box set up and About 3/4 of the way through the movie I said to him, so how much is it gonna cost me to get into this. After the movie he told me the prices of everything and I was like ![]() At that time nobody rented DVD's (trust me i tryed) so i started buying. And I had a blast. something just got in my blood. I enjoyed the convenience of just grabbing it right there, the shock factor from family & friends when they saw my collection or experienced a DVD for the first time like I did. That pretty much satisfied me until 2002 when that same friend got his first HDTV and showed me PBSHD for the first time (1 of only few HD Channel at the time) Once again I was blown away. I didn't know anything about resolution, etc at the time and i wouldn't believe it looked better than DVD, but I soon came to a realization that it did. I enjoyed progressive scan for a couple of years on my first plasma, and cable HD, but i soon found myself exploring other means of HD on disc. I was so tempted so many times to buy DVHS, but everytime i even mentioned it to friends they laughed at me so hard when i said tape, that i couldn't help but think they were right, and wait it out. So at that time with nearly 500 DVD's i decided to stop buying DVD's. Then I heard blu-ray was comming...and well, i got a boner for it...and well now i've got it and HDDVD and have over 200 discs between the two formats. I've also established 2 hometheater setups in my home with both running 1080p sets, BD & HD etc. You could say I'm hooked. But the biggest thing for me is the pride of being the first kid on the block with it, and 2-3 years from now when my j6p friends are just getting into it (they'll think it's new then) they'll see my collection and go HOLY FU^*! ![]() Last edited by BTBuck1; 10-27-2007 at 11:15 PM. |

i agree with BTbuck1 i love the look on people's face when i say iv'e got 100+ discs and im not even close to having my playstation 3 or hd dvd add on for a year.
and as others have said its good to be able to go to your shelf and grab a movie when you feel like instead of running down to the local block buster etc. |
