Default Pirates of the Caribbean 1:85:1

The blu aspect ratio is 2.40:1. But on encore hd, it's 1.85:1

Most of the time movies on TV are full screen.

It's just bizarre that the original aspect ratio is 2.40:1, but a 1.85:1 version of the film is out there. I guess to compensate for televised 4x3 airings, but I always thought that was done through zooming/cropping of the original film.

Didn't know this was shot at Super35.

But yeah, when it comes to HD, 2.35:1 films are mostly cropped to 1.78:1 so it can fit the whole TV. If it was shot at Super35, then a 2.35:1 will be open-matte to 1.78:1.

Watch for spring boards on the floor and all kinds of other shit that wasn't supposed to be in frame. Wasn't there a framing issue with the first batch of bd's of the first film anyway?
They don't just open matte super-35 for cable, they crop the crap out of anamorphic 2.39 flicks too. Caught the end of Jaws 4 the other day and it was cropped. I hate it cropped!

Traditionally, 35mm film has a full frame of 1.37:1.

1.85:1 films as well as some 2.35:1 films (shot in Super 35) shoot this full 1.37:1 image and crop the tops and bottoms of the frame to the desired aspect ratio. For 2.35:1 films this can lead to a grainy picture so many 2.35:1 films are shot with anamorphic lenses that distort the image (essentially stretching out faces vertically) so it takes up the full 1.37:1 frame and the movie is later projected at the proper ratio. Since these do not have more information at the tops and bottoms, they will be pan & scanned if shown at a taller aspect ratio. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anamorphic_format

Not exactly. Super 35 uses the area of the film normally reserved for the soundtrack to store a wider image. The AR of a Super 35 image on the negative is 1.66:1, not 1.37:1. The 2.35:1 image is then extracted from this and either blown up optically to Panavision or, in the case of Pirates (which used a "digital" intermediate), digitally scanned and then printed to anamorphic prints.
