Default need a new SACD player

Going to be getting the Emotiva UMC-200 and I found out it doesn't support DSD via HDMI and my current Blu-ray player does not have analog outputs.

So I need something to play my SACD's (and maybe DVD-A) that has the analog outputs and good DAC's

id like to stay under $200, but if I got something substantially better id consider up to $400

A used Oppo BDP-83 would work and fit that price range.

someone mentioned there was an inexpensive pioneer that did (I don't know the model sadly)

and just if I wasn't clear, it doesn't have to be a Blu-ray player, all it will be used for is SACD and DVD-A

Used market might be good for you, an older Oppo 980 dvd, HK 48, certain Denons. Thought a used Oppo 83 or 93 would be an excellent choice, depending on how much they go for as the 103 at $499 would be brand new and warrantied.

I could do the 103, is it really that amazing? Only reason I might be able to justify it is that I could replace my Blu-ray player and DVD-A player (my Blu-ray didn't do DVD-A) at the same time

Also someone mentioned that I could do PCM over HDMI. Would that work and would there be any disadvantages to that?

This may be what you're referring to. You might like the black one better:

This may be out of your price range, but the Oppo 103 have been receiving rave reviews from all the critics, and consumers. It's price at $4.99.

I have a 93 and am more than pleased. I was hesitant over the price since I was on a budget but it has exceeded my expectations. Handles anything I've thrown at it pretty much flawlessly. I have no doubt the 103 is worth the $4.99 quoted above, let alone $499.

Hi BLindsay,

I have a Pioneer DV 47Ai that works pretty well for SACD and I assume DVD A (I don't have any). I think I have seen the DV 79Ai go on ebay for that range used in good condition. You could look at ebay for late model Denon and Marantz in that range as well. Best of luck.

For around $250, a brand new Sony BDP-S790 player is your best choice. It can play multi-channel SACD in its native DSD format. It is not built as well as an Oppo, but its performance is as good. I bought one for 3D movies and am very happy with its performance.

Unless I am completely missing something here (which happens more often than not haha) the 790 wouldn't work for the same reason as my 580, the Emotiva UMC-200 doesn't support DSD.

That said a few have mentioned I should be able to do PCM over HDMI for my SACD's (would this work and are there any drawbacks?)

If I go that route how would my Sony S580 hold up against the Oppo 103 (from what I hear its true strength lies in Analog outputs)

There is some controversy involved as far as sending the SACD signals from the player to the processor in its native DSD format or converting it to PCM. I have done extensive testing and switched back and forth and could not reach a definitive conclusion.

Some processors cannot handle DSD and automatically convert the oncoming signals to PCM. Also, many processors cannot perform bass management when DSD is used. The vast majority of receivers and pre/pros perform bass management in PCM.

As far as analog connection is concerned, it really depends on the D/A converters in the player as opposed to the receiver/processors. There are very minor differences between D/A chips. Additionally, when you use analog connection, bass management, speaker setting, and equalization has to be performed in the player. Most receivers/processors have better bass management and room equalization than players.

I am using the Sony for SACD and the Pioneer for DVD-Audio.

They dont have multi channel output and i bet the DAC's are cheapo

I know it's a few months since the last post and you probably already have a solution, but I'd just like to add a great SACD player to the list:

The Yamaha DVD-S1800 DVD/SACD/DVD-A player...

I bought mine brand new on Amazon a while back for a price that I couldn't pass up, $80 (for a $300+ retail player). Sounds better than when I tried analog through my OPPP BDP-93... It has excellent Brown Burr DAC components and 5.1 analog out section. It's a discontinued model though, and Yamaha no longer sells standalone DVD players. They do have SACD players that are from $1.7k to $2.5k though...
