Any comments about the new German blu-ray which is out now? Is it uncut? How's the PQ/AQ compared to Russian blu-ray which was MPEG2 encoded and to make it even worse 1080i 50Hz.

I just got mine from Amazon today. It's region free and looks decent, but not spectacular.

I have the russian Blu-Ray which came out 2 years ago or something like that - is it 1080i ![]() could you please confirm if the German blu-ray is : - uncut ??? ![]() in a nutshell we can see Eva Green cooking ratatouille among other things... http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=567941 (I've never understood why this scene where Isabelle cooks a gratin deauphinois was cut...) - 1080p24 ??? ![]() - correct ratio ? (the Russian blu-ray is slightly cropped - but the picture quality was excellent) (should be 1.85 : 1 according to imdb.com) thanks a lot... |

German BD is 24 fps for sure and AVC encoded. I've seen the bdinfo. Will copy paste it here later. I can't remember if it was 23.976 or 24.000 fps though.
You can see from screen captures in post #3 that the aspect ratio is probably closer to 1.78:1 (16:9) than original 1.85:1. Framing also seems to differ from US dvd assuming caps are from exactly same time stamp. Links to German sites in the opening post claim that this is uncut. Btw, Russian BD is 1080i and it's also 50 Hz! That's PAL speed-upped. Last edited by hansolo; 03-20-2013 at 08:07 AM. |

It is the unrated cut, & has English subtitles for the French but playing the subtitles gives you subtitles for everything French & English. The screenshots links posted above seem to have been deleted.. I imagine it is the same transfer. Ok but not up to today's standards. A couple other early 2000's films I have seen recently on blu-ray were similar, in that what was state of the art digital then is no longer as good. I last saw this film one time at a festival in the fall of 2003. I'm surprised by how much I remembered. I wanted to see it again after seeing Louis Garrel in last year's Little Women. I don't think this looks 100% as good as it did on screen projected from film, but perhaps my eye now catches things I missed? The last scene with the large group of police, it is now obvious that they are CGI'd, or footage of the same few actors reused repeatedly. I don't remember noticing that in cinema. I haven't watched the special features. Here is what is listed: Audio commentary with Bernardo Bertolucci, Gilbert Adair, & Jeremy Thomas Making film France, May 1968 Trailer 1 Trailer 2 I didn't realize that it was Eva Green in this. Of course when I saw it in 2003, it was her first film. But I now associate her most with her 3 Tim Burton films. It will be odd to rewatch those with her performance in this now refreshed in my mind. Mrs Peregrine was such a naughty girl. I feel sorry for Michael Pitt, that he hasn't had a better career. He was so good here. |
