you beat me here!

I hope this gets made! I cannot wait!!
I have never supported a Kickstarter campaign before, but this one I jumped on. I figure I would have bought a blu-ray or digital copy or something of the final movie anyway, so it basically pays for itself.

Quote:
In the spring of next year, the Veronica Mars faithful could be watching their beloved heroine (plus her pals Wallace and Mac, bad-boy ex Logan, proud P.I. pops Keith, and more) on the big screen — as long as they kick in a few bucks right now to get things started. Today, Thomas and Bell are launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a low-budget Mars movie that would be shot this summer. The goal: $2 million in 30 days. If they reach it, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has agreed to put the movie into production and pick up the tab for marketing, promotion, and distribution. (The film would be released in the first quarter of 2014 for a limited-time theatrical run, before moving to VOD, iTunes, and other digital platforms.) If they don’t reach the goal: No movie.

Thomas tells Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive joint interview this week (click here to buy the issue) with Bell that the Kickstarter strategy represents the only way a Veronica Mars movie was ever going to get made: Warner Bros. had previously determined that a film with a bigger budget and a conventional marketing plan was too expensive and not viable for the studio. Thomas and Bell are confident that fans of the show will rally to the cause — especially since they’re offering an array of rewards packages for pledges as low as $10 (updates during production and a copy of the script on the day of release) and as high as $10,000 (a part in the movie).

Thomas says he has such high hopes for how much they can raise, “I’m afraid to say it out loud.”

“I’ll say it,” says Bell. “$100 million!” (She’s joking.) (Maybe.)

Thomas and Bell have even more to say about their Veronica Mars dreams and schemes in a video they shot for the campaign’s Kickstarter page. The witty short features donuts, a puppet show, several familiar faces (brace yourself for the return of a certain broody someone’s smoldering gaze), and… well, you don’t need any more description, because you can watch it right now, right here:

Fun Fact! That puppet-show theater was built by Bell’s fiancé, actor Dax Shephard.

Another Fun Fact? That video was actually shot in February of last year. Yep: The plan to revive Veronica Mars has been in the works for quite awhile, and you can get all the details from Bell and Thomas about how their plan came together in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on newsstands and tablets this Thursday. You’ll also get some scoop on the plot of the movie, which involves mystery, murder, and yes, a high school reunion

It's tempting to contribute to their campaign, but now I can't fork over $10k to have a speaking line... Ah well.

On a serious note, I'll probably send them a few bucks in the next couple of days.

They're now over $400,000 pledged and the $10,000 speaking role has already been pledged. It seems very possible that they're going to hit the $2 million and this might actually happen after years of Thomas and Bell trying to get the movie made.

Edit: In the last 8 minutes they've raised another $50,000+. At the rate they're going they might hit the $2 million today.

What the heck? I've been waiting years for this. It would have been so easy for me to donate hundreds or dollars to this for the stuff they are offering, but everything is shipping within US only? Bummer.

For those familiar with Kickstarter will they stop taking donations if they hit $2 million or do they keep taking donations until the scheduled end? It'd be nice if they could raise more than $2 million and get a bigger budget.

They'll keep taking donations until it ends... As long as it ends over $2M, they'll be getting all of the pledged funds.

It'd be nice to see them getting a good chunk more! I'd be very impressed if they went up to $5M or so.

I think Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion need to take note of how fast this is raking in $$. Serenity 2 would probably be going 5x faster. Get on it!

I was thinking the same thing.

This seriously has the potential to start a new trend. The problems for Serenity are that it would need a lot more than $2 million because of the effects and there may be more issues with scedules between Whedon and some of the cast, primarily Fillion.

Whedon could use this to finance any of his microbudget projects like Much Ado About Nothing though. Just post a video giving a short pitch without giving too much away about the project and people will probably throw money at it so that it gets made.

Definitely. I think Kickstarter is actually a great tool for some of the more niche and cult filmmakers, actually any filmmaker, who is trying to make a film but a studio won't back it. It's a really testament on just how the film industry is changing, and how fans can really help make films happen. I hope this one gets its goal, and lets be honest, it doesn't look like there's anyway it won't, because this could really make more filmmakers take notice on how to get passion projects off the ground that a studio may not necessarily want to back.

it is sad when the fans have to give money to get a movie made. and studios wonder why people don't want to go to the movies as much anymore - give them what they want, and they will see it. get the feeling this is how a lot of movies are going to get made now.

That's not necessarily a bad thing though. In a way, this is a good thing. It means studios will start to take notice, and for those films they may not back, at least there will be a means to get them made. I think this is a big step forward for the film and television industry, and I really hope it'll succeed. I have no doubt it will.

I had tweeted this idea like a year ago, maybe less, and Rob Thomas liked it. I wonder if that gave them the idea. Regardless this is the best news I will likely ever get in my life. I want to see them raise a shitload of money. What that would mean? WB obviously underestimated the fans and the movie can have a bigger budget. I think right now they'd just dump it in a few theaters if it only made the goal, but they might re-consider if this brings out a lot of really passionate people. It's getting at least $100 from me, and I'm practically broke .

I have been campaigning for this to happen for forever. Once I see it I could die fulfilled. LOL.

I guess this would also increase the chances of the series being released on blu-ray marginally.

LOL! Oh well I guess.

Anyway, I never stopped believing in this and hoping. Everyone thought I was nuts to still be holding out hope for it. So glad to have that not confirmed. LOL.
