Post Mature Animated Films

I'm a big fan of animation, but I'm interested in trying more adult-oriented animation. This does not mean raunchy or r-rated, I consider some Pixar films as more "mature" offerings.

I've seen all the Ghibli films (and loved them), along with some others, but just recommend everything you can think of. Even if I've seen it your suggestions will be useful to other people looking for the same thing.

A lot of the Batman animated films are geared towards mature viewers. They're actually more enjoyable than 80% of live action super hero movies.

Batman: Under the Red Hood
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Batman: Year One
Dark Knight Returns (Parts I & II)
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (DVD only)
Wonder Woman

A Scanner Darkly, Animatrix, and Iron Giant are definitely worth considering.

You can also try KING OF THORN, ALLEGRO NON TROPPO,
and the MEGA ZONE 23 series.

I almost forgot:

and

and

(some would say this provided the basis for TOY STORY).

Haven't seen Wonder Woman, agree 100% on all of the Batman vids.

I like "The Secret of NIMH."

Another animated film that had some nice adult themes to it that I really enjoyed was "The Iron Giant" (wish we would get that one on Blu-ray).

Ahh, back in the days when Brad Pitt actually appeared in worthwhile, quality entertainment ! That just might be his greatest film...though my personal favorite performance of his was in "True Romance."

Good thread!

Are you referring to 2D animation or any kind of animation?

If it's any kind, I wonder if any of the various annual animated film festivals ever get released to bluray. I love those.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Just rented Persepolis, looking into the others.

Page14, absolutely any kind of animation. And yes, I wish some of the festival animation would come to Blu.

I'd buy Fritz the Cat in the unlikely event of a Blu release.
