Default Most Money You've Spent on a Blind Purchase

My apologies if this isn't quite different enough from that other "Blind Buy" thread that is floating around out there that I can't find right now.

When I ask the question, I'm asking from a "Seriously, what's the craziest decision you've made to drop a ton of money on something you've never seen?" perspective.

For example:

I own nine seasons of THE X-FILES on DVD, and the two movies on Blu-ray, and I've never seen a minute of any of it. It was kind of like "Screw it. It seems like something I'd like." I've owned it all for like two years and I haven't watched it out of fear of being wrong, ha.

Also, I bought that big HOMICIDE: THE COMPLETE SERIES box few months back for essentially the same reason. "I like everything else with David Simon's name on it, so why not?!"

Anyone else completely financially irresponsible on more than one occasion?

EDIT: To be very, very clear, I'm not talking about times where you blind bought something, but it was cheap so it's all good. I'm talking about what, in retrospect, is unarguably hilariously poor judgement, financially speaking. Double points if you spend a ton of money on something you ended up not liking.

See, that's not that bad, though. From a sheer numbers perspective I can totally justify that.

Was it new?

Another thread for people to show off how little they paid for blu rays? Sounds perfect.

Yeah, that's actually the exact opposite of what I intended, though. So I hope people don't take it that way.

What I'm saying is mainly "Tell me about the really, really stupid decision you made one time."

All of THE X-FILES and the movies, while cheap (I guess), still cost me like $150 (maybe even a little more) for something I have literally never seen before. That is INSANE But in the moment I was like "Oh my God, nothing has ever made more sense than this does right now."

About $45 for the Inception briefcase edition.

It's money very well spent.

Hurm. Yes, yes I do.

How do we fix this?

I edited all references to "cheap" from the original post. Maybe that was my mistake. We'll see.

Interesting question.

I think I paid around $50ish for...

...a new copy of America Lost and Found: The BBS Story

...used copies of the first five seasons of Lost. Technically these were individual purchases but I bought them all at pretty much the same time from the same place (GoHastings) so I look at it as buying the series blind.

Don't we all in some way blind buy movies? I'm talking about when you goto a theater to watch a movie, you have to pay for your ticket. So when people say they never blind buy, how true is that?

Now I know people will say something like "I had a gift card, or someone else paid for it" but it's still being paid by someone.

Just to keep the tradition going, I paid about $40 in your money for a copy of The Man Who Fell To Earth Criterion and I'd never seen it before. I liked it.

Yeah, see? That's what I'm talking about. That's a pretty significant investment for one movie that you've never seen, especially something as polarizing as that is.

Okay, so we're talking about crazy decision-making blind-buys. My mistake.

Must have spent close to $40 for the limited steelbook edition of A Trip to the Moon. I got it because, well, it's a steelbook, and as an avid sci-fi fan, I wanted the first and most original sci-fi film of all time. It's a good edition and a fine enough film, but I didn't expect it to be 15 minutes long. So I spent $40 for several versions of a 15 minute film, and some extras, in a nice metal case with a booklet.

Also spent about $52 on the David Lean / Noel Coward box set from Criterion. I got it purely because of David Lean, but I didn't realize that all four films were basically plays. They're good films and all, they just didn't engage me as much as I expected. I liked two of the four in that set.

Some other iffy ones include $30 for Tree of Life, $29 for Hitchcock, $28 for Cabin in the Woods, $25 for Lockout, $27 for Skyline, $27-ish for The Darkest Hour, $28 for The Immortals, $23 for Red Tails, $18 for Birdemic, 18 GBP for the Tetsuo double-feature, €20 for the German copy of Painted Skin with no English on it, and $30 for Daft Punk's Interstella 5555.

Jeez, I gotta stop.

12.99 Tron Legacy.

I should have used that money to stab my ankle with a garden hoe from Ace Hardware.

Complete blind buy would be Game of Thrones S2 or Band of Brothers - Both were $35.

I paid $120 for Bond 50, which I'd only seen the Brosnan and Craig films.

I forked over $43.xx to blind buy The Three Colors Trilogy last summer, and thoroughly enjoyed each of those films.

Second most would probably be the $30+tax I coughed up for the Blade Runner 5-disc set.

For a film (non-TV) probably around $13 for used copies of Apocalypse Now, Harold & Maude: Criterion & Rosemary's Baby: Criterion. I paid $15 for a used copy of Gimme Shelter but I've seen about half of it so I wouldn't consider it a blind purchase.
