I think Ben Hur is the better film. Plus, the transfer is much superior.
I bet in a couple of months the Ben Hur/Ten Commandments double feature can be had for $10 or so: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ben-H...Blu-ray/63230/ (something to consider) |

Spartacus is, for me, easily the better of the two. I just couldn't get into Ben-Hur at all.

Well, SPARTACUS (1913) is definitely quite a bit better than BEN-HUR (1907), but BEN-HUR (1926) is drastically superior to SPARTACUS (1913). Sadly none of these is on Blu-ray although Warner's DVD of the 1926 BEN-HUR looks very nice.
Oh, wait... Okay, BEN-HUR (1926) is often just as good and sometimes better than BEN-HUR (1959). BEN-HUR (1959) is as good (but in a different way) as SPARTACUS (1960), but the Warner Blu-ray of BEN-HUR is much more impressive than Universal's softish-looking Blu-ray of SPARTACUS. Both are worth getting. If you're more into Biblical stories, you'll probably prefer BEN-HUR. If you're more into ancient Roman action epics, you'll probably prefer SPARTACUS. |

Spartacus is a great movie, a classic in every sense of the word. But I can honestly say that I never felt the need to watch it more than once.
Ben Hur, however, takes it place alongside The Ten Commandments, as a movie I watch at least once a year, usually on or around Easter |
