Thumbs up Shout! Factory signs ITV Studios deal

Quote:
Home entertainment agreement will see Shout! Factory distribute ITV Studios Global Entertainment films in North America.

North American distributor Shout! Factory and UK distributor ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) have secured a deal to partner on home entertainment and digital distribution.

The agreement will see an extensive library of acclaimed cinema classics back to the home entertainment marketplace in the US and Canada.

Titles include Sophie’s Choice; On Golden Pond; The Eagle Has Landed; The Last Unicorn; The Tamarind Seed; Capricorn One; The Cassandra Crossing; Brief Encounter; Saturn 3; The Merchant of Venice; Voyage of the Damned and The Boys from Brazil.

Some of these titles have never been available on Blu-ray or DVD. In addition, bonus content is currently in development by Shout! Factory for special editions and double features.

Many of these films have been available for years as region-free Blu-rays in the UK. My guess is that Shout uses those existing transfers for their versions.

Some of these are already up for pre-order at Amazon and they are DVD only so not all will get blu ray releases.

Are you sure that you're not referring to previous DVD releases by other companies?

I'm sure that all titles mentioned in press release will find their way on Blu-ray in not too distant future. Some of them already did (Saturn 3, The Eagle Has Landed).

Only four ITV titles got a UK blu-ray release:

The Eagle Has Landed
Capricorn One
The Boys From Brazil
Escape to Athena

I wouldn't bet against a Scream Factory release of The Company of Wolves as a result of this.

I'm personally hoping for some Hitchcock/Lean/Powell that Criterion may not have.

While not mentioned on their initial list, I'm really hoping that we get Legend of the Lone Ranger, especially since there is a german blu so a HD master exists. The American disc was a crappy 1:33 pan and scan atrocity. Also really hope Raise the Titanic comes out. It was only released in USA as a pan and scan 1:33 crop of the 2:35 film. In UK it was only released so far as I know in non-anamorphic 2:35. This film needs a good HD upgrade.
Already have Voyage pre-ordered along with the Love and Bullets/Russian Roulette 2 pack. Can't wait for more great titles to be announced

If Shout does The Last Seduction, it needs to have both cuts of the film (much like the UK DVD).

Sophie's Choice has been announced for November, only to be delayed until '14 in order to secure more extras.

I also fully expect to see following titles released on blu next year.

On Golden Pond; Capricorn One; The Cassandra Crossing and The Boys from Brazil.

Unfortunately, they don't have The Company of Wolves and The Last Seduction. The former is with Hen's Tooth, and the latter..who knows.

If you mean ITC titles, the 1979 version of All Quiet on the Western Front was an ITC release in the UK, as was The Company of Wolves. From their Rank catalogue titles, ITV released The IPCRESS File, A Night to Remember, Henry V, Bugsy Malone and several others.

Maybe Michael Winner's Firepower (1979) will show up on one of the future "All Night Action Marathon" sets or as a Blu-ray, as a result of this deal.

I'll be interested in buying:

The Eagle Has Landed, Capricorn One, The Boys from Brazil, The Cassandra Crossing, and Saturn 3. Possibly On Golden Pond.

Isn't Glengarry Glen Ross owned by ITV? I'm a little suprised it wasn't part of the deal. I already own the import anyway, but I'm hoping it'll turn up someday with the two laserdisc commentaries. I hear the Jack Lemmon one is very insightful.

I've always wanted to see Raise the Titanic. The prequel that James Cameron directed several years ago was pretty good, but I never got around to seeing the original film.

The Cassandra Crossing and The Domino Principle seem to be more up my alley, though.

Great announcements!

THE DOMINO PRINCIPLE is one seriously AWFUL film...one of the worst of its decade. Can't imagine why they're releasing it...but anyway...lol.

It is incredibly dull, but it has one of the most bonkers openings of any conspiracy thriller, with a lengthy and truly surreal paranoid rant delivered in voice over by a stern Patrick Allen sounding for all the world like the managing director of a ball bearings firm who's been slipped a peyote LSD chaser and handed a script written by an out-of-his head Dennis Hopper after reading too much Franz Kafka as captions reading `ASSASSINATION' (in several languages) and 'WHAT AUTHORITY DO THEY REPRESENT? are intercut with photos and stock footage of murders, state buildings, Vietnam and prison to underline the point that we're all part of a giant conspiracy. You almost expect him to end it with "I'm not wearing any trousers and I've got a gun." It's like something out of an Ed Wood film that even Bela Lugosi wouldn't read:

"Do you believe you decided to come to this theatre today? That it was your own idea? Of your own.. free will? Whether we know it or not, we're all manipulated. It's getting almost impossible to think or even act for ourselves anymore. We're manipulated. Programmed. Brainwashed. Right from the start. Right from the day we're born. By family, by press, by radio, by television. And more and more we know less and less of who THEY are. Who could they be? Is it the boss we work for? Who tells him what to do? Is it the government? Whoever's in power, it seems just the same. So, who's behind THEM? It's reached a point when they could take an ordinary man and so manipulate him that they could get him to kill the most important person in the world. Like the hero of a book written by Franz Kafka fifty years ago, we feel ourselves powerless, unable to control anymore what really happens to us. Perhaps we're all the victim of some appalling conspiracy. What authority could they represent? Listen to me. I want you to watch what happened to this ordinary man. He lived in a country with a legal constitution. All the laws were in force. Like many of his generation he was sent to fight in Vietnam. He survived, fell in love, got into trouble, wound up in jail. Then THEY really started to work on him. He fell victim to what they call the Domino Principle. The irresistible force of chain reaction..."
