"The film was remade by Warner Brothers in 2006 as The Lake House starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock." A must have. |

It is good, and it is better than the remake, but I'll agree that the remake wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. I still have this on DVD from Korea, one of the few DVD-sets I still own. I do adore Jeon Ji-Hyeon after I first saw her in My Sassy Girl, so that did play into my enjoyment quite a bit. I'd recommend it.

I love this film. Although The Lake House does a little better job of making sense out of the "time travel" Il Mare beats it on charm. I think Il Mare is the better film but its not a blowout.
When I was researching buying Il Mare on DVD I remember reviews saying all the versions had some problem or other with the English subtitles. I hope the blu-ray has improved the subtitles. Il Mare is also available at Yesasia. The price is a bit higher but there's free shipping and it comes out a little cheaper. Also, Yesasia has $3 coupons for first time customers (which, unfortunately I'm not). As for the English subtitles, the Korean and HK dvds have two different translations and the best translation is the HK disc. Unfortunately, the HK disc still utilizes the first non-letterbox transfer and never got a re-release. A few years later, the movie was re-released in Korea with a brand new 16x9 anamorphic transfer supposedly supervised and color timed by the director. Unfortunately, that transfer suffered from a lot of edge-enhancement. Furthermore, the English subtitles still utilized the inferior translation from the first release. Still, the picture was miles better. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the bluray release and seeing a young Jeon Ji-hyun in HD would be amazing. Though I'm not surprised if the bluray release uses the older and inferior translation. Hopefully HK will pick this movie up and make their own release in the near future. Michael |

I don't know anything about Harison & Co (K2DVD link says Warner?). I have the HK DVD, which I recall as not that great, so looking forward to hopefully a good BR release.
I also saw the remake first and did enjoy it and still do, but the original is far superior IMHO. Last edited by timae; 08-07-2013 at 02:08 PM. |
