Blu-ray Samurai

The gang that ran Birmingham's Small Heath district named after their caps which had razor blades sewn into them. The series got off to an excellent start thanks to tight pacing, evocative settings and a quality cast led by Cillian Murphy and Sam Neill. Accents were a bit shaky, venturing as far as Black Country with a bit of Liverpool but nothing too offensively seterotyped. This could have been a true epic crime story if it had covered the thirty years of gang wars that raged across Birmingham but that would have required a commitment beyond the BBC's limited finances, instead the series focuses on a neglected period of British history, the aftermath of World War 1 where the government was terrified of Communist revolution and anyone who appeared slightly subversive was beaten or simply disappeared. The series also scores for representing Birmingham's diverse communities of immigrants. Blu ray is out on October 21st. For more Birmingham crime see the classic 70s BBC series Gangsters or try the book of short stories Birmingham Noir.

It played in my region free insignia player on region A setting, and played easily in my Xbox one. It doesn't play on my PS3 though, I'm pretty sure that's a firmware thing.

Thanks for your response! I'll go ahead and order it then, I'm impatient and don't want to wait for whenever it airs in the US. I can always return it if it doesn't work on my region A player.

Just finished Series 2.
Holy crap, the star talent they worked into this. Noah Taylor (who I knew between playing Father Bucket in the Burton-fied Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and his stint in the Lara Croft movies with Angelina Jolie, until he became Locke in Game of Thrones) and Tom Hardy...a couple highlights among many. It's good to see that this show got enough popularity to get bigger...Series 3 has me ready. |
