Default Lionsgate: Two New Major UltraViolet Retailers Expected to Announce Shortly

Just a bit of news...hopefully:

http://www.homemediamagazine.com/hig...-shortly-31833

One multichannel video program distributor also set to rollout electronic sellthrough of movies and TV shows

Two major domestic retailers are expected to announce in the coming weeks their support for the distribution of electronic sellthrough (EST) movies with UltraViolet functionality, Lionsgate co-COO Steve Beeks told analysts.

Speaking Nov. 8 on the mini-major’s fiscal call, Beeks reiterated recent industry data underscoring 50% growth in EST revenue in the third quarter — much of it driven by the early digital release (ahead of packaged media) of movies across more than a dozen digital platforms.

Major retailers currently supporting EST and UltraViolet include Walmart, Target and Best Buy.

Beeks, along with CEO Jon Feltheimer, said the undisclosed retailers would buttress high-margin digital sellthrough market — both domestically and abroad — by making new release movies available with UltraViolet functionality up to a month early for $14.99.

“That’s going to accelerate growth in the EST marketplace even further,” Beeks said, adding that early release of Lionsgate titles is done on “an opportunistic” basis.

“We look at every single film differently and make a judgment call on what can of film is going to benefit from [early release],” Beeks said.

Feltheimer said at least one multichannel video program distributor, such as cable, satellite and telecommunications, in the next few weeks will rollout an EST platform, which could also include early releases. MVPDs heretofore have limited their retail exposure to transactional VOD movie rentals.

“When that happens, it’s really going to open up amazing opportunities for the future of electronic sellthrough,” Feltheimer said. “And I think you’re going to see it in a very short period of time.”

Possible candidates are Amazon Instant, Redbox Instant, Google Play, Xbox Video Store, BlockBuster Now, or Sony Playstation Network. I am hoping for Amazon and Redbox Instant. If Amazon goes UV, then most likely Lovefilm will do the same. If that's the case, then UV will increase it's userbase almost overnight. We could see Hundreds of thousands of new users every day for a while. That could be 3 million in the first month. This would encourage Disney to join the UV system.

Redbox already announced UV support before they launched. It just hasn't been implemented. I hope it's someone else then. It'd be a bit of a let down if it was them. I'm hoping for 2 completely new to UV services though I'd take Amazon (who announced UV plans about 2 years ago and then never mentioned a word about it again).

On another note, according to the news report I read Comcast will NOT be ultraviolet. At least initially. It said you can keep your content after you leave Comcast but will be stuck watching it through the web.

Home Media Magazine says that Comcast is going to open an EST on Demand Channel to it's lineup.

So will there be any way to take our existing UV collection over to them?

You'll be able to link any service that supports UV to your existing UV locker. There will be no need to take your collection anywhere. The centralized UV locker is the constant, with the various services connecting to it.

So, i currently watch my UV movies through Flixster.

I have never used VUDU....So you're saying i can sign up to VUDU and connect my existing UV account to VUDU and it'll work, right?

Will i still be able to use Flixster?

Yes and yes.

Definitely give Vudu a try. You might like it better than Flixster. A lot of people do.

I'm beginning to think we won't hear about this until CES 2014.

One strong possibility is Verizon Fios.
