Default Subwoofer Power & Reference 75DB Audyessey

Hello,

I have an old velodyne VA-1012-B-forward firing 10", passive downfiring 12". Class A/B 60 Watts RMS.

What I'm wondering is, on my Onkyo 818 Audessey reference levels puts me at about 2.75 gain. Newer subs in the 400-750 dollar range seem to have anywhere from 250-500 watts give or take. So, if my gain is not even at 3, how is this more beneficial if the system is already limiting the refrerence level to a low gain setting?

I'm a assuming more headroom, but just wanted to know benefits of upgrading. I had the entry level SVS PB1000 it did not find that it was much of an upgrade-this was only a demo by the way.

Thanks.

I owned your sub for awhile, and I've heard the PB1000 in a buddy's HT set-up. To me, there was no comparison in the two.

The SVS has a frequency response down to 19hz, while the 1012 is maybe good for 30-35hz...this ability to reach lower frequencies is quite beneficial especially when watching movies. Not to mention, the SVS has more power, and won't bottom out easily when the demand for power is there.

IMO, I feel you need to give the PB1000 another chance, and possibly try different placements with it by doing the sub crawl. The SVS has much cleaner bass than the Velodyne, and has quite a bit more headroom than the Velodyne.

Edit:

I Just looked at your gallery again, when I had that sub, it didn't fair so well in a corner like you have it, it was rather boomy. Honestly, it needs to be able to breathe a little. I would suggest trying to pull it out some from the walls.
If that is your only option.....

I appreciate the feedback. I have it 7" from the wall, one of the reasons I can't move it around is because I'm in a apartment and this makes it less loud for neighbors, that and my projector setup.

I did try the crawl once but could not quite hear any real difference. Much if my opinion was based on running REW and not seeing much of a difference in the graphs. I know the PB is better, I just didn't see it at the time for it to be that much better for 20+ years change in technology. The VA1012 is rated down to 25hz.

All that said I could be wrong I'm not saying the PB 1000 is not great, maybe just not the large difference one may see from 42-65 " screen to a large projector screen. I just want a little more info as to why, that's all I'm trying to gather. It's a humbling hobby, but I do live it .
