Question Wavy / Ripple effect on blu ray artwork

Hi guys,

Alot of my UK Amarays & US blu's have a slight ripple or wavy effect on the artwork inserts. The outer plastic is not wavy however. I know about condensation etc. but do many of you also experience this? Its nothing too major, but its definitely there. My OCD acts up everytime I pull out a BD now, ha!

Just to be clear; I'm not talking about the BD's arriving like this, they come mint, and start going wavy after some time.

-Sam

It might have something to do with the location you store your BDs. If the room has a large contrast in temperature or moisture in the air it will cause the paper to ripple. It would have to be extreme though, almost having a BD in a bathroom while you take a shower and then putting it in a hot dry room afterwards. If your BDs are near a radiator in a very cold room (and you only use the radiator on maximum) it might have the same effect.

I do find that some of my pre-owned BDs have slightly stiffer/drier covers than the ones I've bought myself, so I guess they've been in a different environment than our hallway. They feel like all the moisture has been taken out.

Never to my existing collection but I have had orders arrive from Amazon UK & US like this. I think it's returns that are rewrapped by an Amazon employee before being put back on the shelf and sent out to another customer.

The equipment used to do this is a heat/shrink wrap machine, if the heat is too high it damages the plastic and the cover.

This happens on Warner titles a lot. I think the paper is just too thin and affected by the elements (moisture). Sometimes they arrive like this. It bugs me to some extent, makes it look like I spilled water on the things.

I am going to try and borrow a dehumidifyer to see if that helps. My room can be quite cold as its built into an attic so that may be the issue. After looking at most of my blu's, only some are affected. I'm sure every blu ray has a small ripple/bump to some extent, it seems to be just the way they are packaged.

I moved house about 4 years ago and put all the boxes of my books/ CDs/ DVDs and blu-rays into the downstairs room which I was going to use as my movie room/ study. After a few days I noticed a lot of the inlays of CDs and DVDs were warping, apparently it was due to a lot of moisture in the walls as the house was still drying out after being built and the foundations soaking up a lot of water during a bad winter. It totally freaked me out because a lot of these things were paper and being ruined, I'm a bit OCD about my collections and it was really upsetting. Magazines and books would warp and become a wavy within an hour of putting them in the room.
I ended up moving a lot of stuff out of that room and having dehumidifier on for about 3 months to sort out the problem. The worst ones was my copies of Wanted and Hulk, looked like they had been dipped in water and left out to dry all crumpled up.
Definitely think that the cold is an issue, I have some boxes of old CDs and DVDs that were mint in the garage, and when I last looked at them a lot of paper inlays have warped really badly.

Haven't had a problem like that since, but I would definitely recommend getting a dehumidifier and putting the heating on if the room is cold or drafty.
