The Protector 2 aka Tom Yum Goong 2 3D Blu-ray (2013) [Region A Locked]

Got the newest issue of HomeMedia Magazine yesterday and on the front cover / inside cover is an ad for "The Protector 2" in 3D from Magnolia Home Entertainment!

Haven't seen the film....but it is coming in 3 separate versions (3D Blu/Blu - Blu Standalone - or DVD). The 3D UPC is 876964006965

Didn't hear anything about this anywhere in 3D, but it's for real...sweet! Another action film in 3D for the summer!

The Protector 2 (2013)'s original Thailand title is "Tom yum goong 2" via Wikipedia - 'Production' "The film is shot in 3-D with action scenes directed by Weerapon Phumatfon and Somjai Janmoontree". (=Native-3D)

Cool thanks for the info. I have two hopes, that the film won't be terrible and that the 3D will be good.

Protector 1 has a lot of incredible martial arts, so as long as a viewer goes into these films looking for outstanding fighting, there is little chance of being disappointed. But yeah, hopefully the 3D is strong.

I'll keep an eye on this.

Awful movie, and the conversion is just as bad. I'm not sure any native footage made it into the film. Skip it unless you have to own everything.

Similar to Iceman, they claim to have used native 3D cameras, but the vast majority of the film is converted. I doubt that much of the native footage made it into the final cut. The 3D is very poor.

When you're shooting against a green screen unfortunately there's not much that can be done to make the 3D look good. I found that for the most part at least the 3D helped place all the fake action/effects within a 3D space. I did actually watch the film in 2D first and it looks a hell of a lot worse that way, so there is something to be said for watching it in 3D. The film is a real mess though, however you view it. Here are my comments from when I last watched it:

I'd seen the film before in 2D and had a bad time with it, not because it's a mess in terms of plot and structure (which it is), not because the RZA's acting is embarrassingly poor (it is) but because there's a massive amount of cheap CGI and greenscreening. Yes, I could still spot all the blatant fakery but positioning it within a 3D space really helped sell it, it somehow became far more real, almost like an animated feature. Not all of it is saved by the 3D - the greenscreen inserts in a fight near the end still made me cringe - but the difference is like night and day, I could not ever contemplate even attempting to watch the film in 2D ever again - it looks so bad in 2D that it only makes any kind of visual sense in 3D.

Apart from helping sell the ropey CGI, the 3D also provides a pleasing natural depth and features frequent entertaining pop-outs, so it really sucks hard that the film was not released in 3D in the UK or Australia (or region free in the US). I don't think it even got a 2D blu ray release in the UK.

I know, I just highlighted it to show that there's no point waiting for 3D movies to come to you in the format you want them in, you have to take them how you can get them!

I quite enjoyed the 3D in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The Protector 2 was just garbage.

Fair point. The CGI and greenscreening in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For does appear to have had some thought put into its dimensionality, unlike The Protector 2 where they just left the backgrounds flat.

Just a side note, Bought the first Protector from Best Buy to complete the series, but it has been converted (maybe autoconverted?) in Region B

There's no maybe about it, the German release of Tom Yum Goong aka The Protector aka Warrior King is an autoconversion.

It even has two titles there, a 16-rated cut version called Revenge Of The Warrior and an 18-rated uncut version called Return Of The Warrior

Return of the Warrior is actually The Protector 2, which is also available in 2D and 3D in Germany
