Northwest is the hard hitting new drama from award winning director Michael Noer. Set in the impoverished estates of Copenhagen, the film follows Caspar an aspiring gangster who is determined to get to the top. He and his friends begin by carrying out small crimes before working for big time local mob boss Bjørn where things begin to escalate into violent conflicts. You can watch the first trailer for the film below.
Director Michael Noer’s previous film was the highly successful prison drama R which starred Nordic Noir superstar Pilou Asbæk. This new film stars Roland Møller as crime boss Bjørn, a seasoned Nordic actor who won the Best Actor at the Danish equivalent of BAFTA’s for his role in Northwest in February. He also starred in the critically acclaimed A Hijacking (2012) alongside Pilou Asbæk.
Northwest looks set to follow in R’s footsteps as it has already won awards in the Nordic countries Denmark and Sweden as well as France.
Northwest will be released in cinemas on July 25 before being released on DVD, Digital and On Demand on July 28.
Eighteen-year-old Casper (Gustav Dyekjær Giese), who lives in the infamous Nordvest suburb of Copenhagen with his mother, brother Andy and sister Freya, is a talented housebreaker who makes ends meet committing burglaries for neighbourhood boss Jamal. When a rival gangster, Bjorn, makes Caspar an offer of more lucrative terms and, perhaps, the promise of advancement through the ranks of his very white Danish family , the enraged Jamal is not prepared to tolerate defection; things violently escalate, placing the teenager and his family at the centre of a toxic conflict. What could be a predictable genre tale is elevated far above the ordinary by director Noer s fresh script and restrained approach, and by Gustav Dyekjær Giese s natural and powerful performance. His remarkable stillness only serves to intensify Casper s inner turmoil.
Danish crime drama Northwest, directed by Michael Noer and written by Rasmus Heisterberg, follows 18 year-old Casper (Gustav Dyekjaer Giese) as he slowly becomes more involved with a life of crime. The story takes place in one of Copenhagen’s most notorious suburbs, Nordvest.
Nordvest has become a battleground for crime and Casper must commit petty theft in order to make ends meet, working for crime boss Jamal. But where you have crime, you have competition and it’s not long before Casper is finally offered his chance to make his way up the ranks with the new kingpin in town. However, every decision has consequences and Casper throws his family into the centre of a violent war that threatens to destroy them all.
Filmmaker Michael Noer shot the film on location in Nordvest and used local non-professionals as actors. The story of Casper and his brother is also based on two real life brothers he met while visiting the area.
