Default Minority Report TV Show (Steven Spielberg)

Quote:
Steven Spielberg Hiring ‘Godzilla’ Writer for ‘Minority Report’ TV Series (Exclusive)

Steven Spielberg is developing a TV series based on his 2002 hit sci-fi movie “Minority Report” that will be written by “Godzilla” scribe Max Borenstein and produced by Amblin Television, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

A spokesperson for Amblin Television deferred inquiries to a representative for Spielberg, who like Borenstein's representatives, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Based on a futuristic story by Philip K. Dick, “Minority Report” starred Tom Cruise as the head of “PreCrime,” a special police unit that uses three psychics (i.e. “precogs”) to identify and arrest murderers before they commit their crimes. The protagonist is forced to go on the run when he's accused of a future murder himself.

A weekly series will likely focus on the elite PreCrime unit, with Spielberg expected to target a name actor for the lead, just as he did with Halle Berry on CBS’ sci-fi series “Extant.”

At least one current TV show seems to have drawn inspiration from “Minority Report,” as CBS’ “Person of Interest,” from J.J. Abrams and Jonah Nolan, follows an ex-CIA hitman and a scientist who team up to prevent crimes before they happen. The show has performed well, indicating there may be more interest in the subject matter.

While former “Daily Show” showrunner Larry Wilmore will soon host Comedy Central's late-night talk show “The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore,” Spielberg's series is expected to retain its movie title, which still resonates strongly with sci-fi fans.

“Minority Report” grossed $358 million worldwide and received an Oscar nomination for best sound editing. 20th Century Fox distributed “Minority Report,” though it's unclear whether the Fox network would get a first shot at Spielberg's TV series.

Spielberg is currently prepping an untitled Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks and will segue to an adaptation of Roald Dahl's “The BFG” after that, though he is expected to be closely involved in the development of the “Minority Report” TV series. In addition to “Extant,” Spielberg is also an executive producer on Fox's upcoming Octavia Spencer series “Red Band Society.”

Borenstein's modern update of “Godzilla,” directed by Gareth Edwards and produced by Legendary, has grossed more than $500 million worldwide and led to development of a sequel that will stomp into theaters on June 8, 2018.

I love Philip K. Dick and I like the Minority Report film so this has a chance of being good. Please be better than Falling Skies.

PKD's writing is rich and can be mined for some good story elements, which I hope this does better than Total Recall 2070 did. Androids, Memory and Emotion Control, an entire war with our technology eluded to in many of his short stories, mutations, and new militaristic police forces.

Minority Report is my second favorite Spielberg film behind A.I., so I'm definitely interested.

Female-Led 'Minority Report' TV Follow-Up Lands at Fox

It's official: Fox is plotting a TV sequel to Tom Cruise's 2002 feature Minority Report.

The drama has landed at the network with a hefty put-pilot commitment with a significant penalty attached, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The Minority Report follow-up takes place 10 years after the end of Precrime in D.C. when one of the three Precogs struggles to lead a "normal" human life but remains haunted by visions of the future. He meets a detective haunted by her past who just may help him find a purpose to his gift.

From Amblin Television, Paramount Television and 20th Century Fox Television, Godzilla's MaxBorenstein will pen the script and executive produce. Amblin's Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank will executive produce.

The original sci-fi film was directed by Steven Spielberg — who exec produces Amblin's Falling Skies, Under the Dome, Extant, Red Band Society and more. The feature was loosely based on Philip K. Dick's short story and was set in D.C. in 2054 when PreCrime, a specialized police department, arrests criminals passed on "foreknowledge" provided by "Precogs." Cruise starred as the head of the unit, while Colin Farrell played a DOJ agent and Samantha Morton was seniorPrecog Agatha. 20th Century Fox produced the feature alongside Amblin. Paramount Pictures, which owns DreamWorks' library, released the DVD.

For Amblin, the Minority Report revival comes as the company has seven series on five different networks: ABC's midseason drama The Whispers, CBS' Dome and Extant, FX's The Americans, TNT's Falling Skies and upcoming Public Morals as well as Fox's fall debut Red Band Society. The company also has TNT pilot Lumen in the works for a January shoot.

Paramount Television, meanwhile, continues to mine its library for TV. The banner has Nickelodeon's straight-to-series live-action comedy School of Rock in the works. The studio, which returned to TV production with 2013's ill-fated Beverly Hills Cop CBS pilot, also is tapping into its feature library for small-screen takes on Ghost, Terminator and The Truman Show, among other original fare including Fox's live production of Grease.

Borenstein is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and Rosen Feigh; Amblin is repped by WME.

Minority Report also marks the latest film to TV adaptation. FX's Fargo adaptation just won the Emmy for best miniseries; NBC's About a Boy returns for its second season in the fall and Parenthood will end its run this season, among others.

Worth noting: Larry Wilmore's Comedy Central series — also called Minority Report — will launch in January.

Minority Report seemed to inspire the look of so much sci-fi after it that that trailer just looked really bland.

This show can go away and another season of Almost Human can take its place. That would be great.

I'm watching this on Monday night along with Blindspot on NBC for my new shows sampling.

A few of the early reviews on this have been ho-hum, but I really don't care. I want to continue to support science fiction on network TV. FOX looks like they spent some money on this. On the plus side, unlike what happened to Almost Human, FOX actually owns this show, so that will help it stay on the air.

Judging by some of the stuff I read, this is pretty much a futuristic crime procedural. So don't expect any heavily serialized plotlines or arcs.

So far so good, look expensive though. That is never a good thing with Fox, if it doesn't hit some serious numbers can see this going the way of Almost Human. Hopefully the less known cast will make the difference.
