How is the Spenser: For Hire pilot episode presented in the DVD set? Was it originally shown on US TV as a feature length episode?

I would assume it was shown as a full length movie. That is how it is presented on this DVD set. According to Wiki it aired as one epsiode. I'm sure in syndication / reruns they split it into a 2 part episode.
I've watched the Pilot and first episode and the picture is good. It is what you'd expect from a filmed show of this period. The audio is DD Mono 2.0. great DVD set worth every penny so far! Last edited by PowellPressburger; 08-28-2014 at 12:18 AM. |

Is a Warner Brothers Television logo shown at the end of the episodes in the set, and is it the original Warner Brothers Television logo (for the mid-80's)?
Based on the amount of times Spenser: For Hire has been requested for a DVD release by the Warner Archive, hopefully the first season sells very well. Am guessing here, but hopefully the second season gets released early next year. |

I have a feeling Season 3 will be out before winter, hoping for Fall at the latest since that is the final season. They will be able to sell even more esp when consumers know they will be able to complete the series.
![]() I'm juggling so many show right now sadly I'm only on disc 2 of Season 2 but I am loving it. |

Thanks for posting rear boxart for Spenser: For Hire's third (and final) season PowellPressburger. Hopefully the picture on the banner at the top of the rear boxart is from an episode in the third season.
Are there five discs in the third season set, like with the second season set? |

Started plowing through season 1. Forgot just how great this show was!. With so many great shows out there (especially action/adventure/detective shows from the 80's ), this has to be one of my favorites. Too bad it only lasted 3 seasons, looking forward to digging into the next 2 seasons. Great memories and a great, great show.

Started watching the series this past weekend, beginning with the feature-length pilot "Promised Land". I thought the picture was decent. Didn't have any complaints with that (but there was one moment where I had to turn the volume down a bit, where they were at a basketball game in an arena). On the whole I thought it was as good as The Equalizer (word of warning though, there were two or three uses of offensive language).

Great thread. I haven't seen this Spenser for Hire series since the '80's, when I caught a couple of episodes on network TV. I do have fond memories of the show - though never really got into it at the time.
If you like the series, I would highly recommend the Spenser mystery novels that this show is based on. These were written by the late Robert B. Parker, and are some of my favorite mysteries. The Boston, MA area may as well be another character in these books; very well-done. I believe that at least some episodes of the show/TV movies were based on specific books in the series. Parker wrote over 40 books in the series that were published between 1973 & 2013, and after he passed another author continued the series with original novels. I've read all of the Parker-written Spenser books, but haven't read many with the 2nd author: https://www.goodreads.com/series/40546-spenser |

Like with drama series Touched by an Angel, it's taken a while to get used to/get into Spenser: For Hire, but I'm enjoying it more now. Last night's episode originally aired in the States at an apt time (in November 1985), "Autumn Thieves". Lovely autumn/fall scenery in this episode, where Spenser and girlfriend Susan headed out of the city to stay at a bed and breakfast out in the countryside.
Spenser had been working on a case where he was protecting a valuable antique from a group of thieves. I'm sure I recognised one of the guest stars from a second season episode of The Equalizer which I watched last weekend (called "Nocturne"). Like on The Equalizer, there have been some clever action scenes, and "Autumn Thieves" was another example of that (one of the highlights was a shootout in the woods). A couple of pieces of instrumental music reminded me of the Friday the 13th film series (the "ki-ki-ki-ma-ma-ma" audio was one of them). |
