I'm going to state right up front that I guess this can be chalked up as a true first world problem, but anyway...
![]() I have a pretty huge movie collection, and I always used to say in the early days of Blu-ray that I would only double dip on "bigger" titles and ones I only considered my favorites that I already had on DVD... But as my collection has grown, and as I've seen really good Blu-ray deals pop up from time to time, my reason for double dipping occasionally can be blamed on wanting to free up a little shelf space. Case in point... I had and loved the Alien Anthology collection on DVD, but the original set was huge and took up a lot of room. The Blu-ray set offered better picture and audio quality AND took up considerably less room on my shelf... and when it hit $19.99 as a deal of the day at Amazon a while back, I finally gave in. I've done this with a handful of single titles as well. The Crow comes to mind. The original Collector's Series double DVD case was huge. That disc had either audio or video problems as well, I forget which, so when the Blu-ray dropped to $4.99 one day, I snagged it. I've also bought triple feature sets (always on sale and never more than $9.99 or $12.99 usually) that only take up one singular case, to replace DVDs that I had 3 different cases for. I still feel guilty sometimes, like I'm wasting money on things I already have when I could be buying movies I don't already have or putting the money toward non-collection things... but do any of you do the same? |

Was think about getting the Goonies/Gremlins 1 and 2 triple-Disc thing to save on space. May be some other of those I could do that with too. I'm running out of space on my movie shelf and have limited my purchasing to that shelf only.

i don't actually consider upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray as "double-dipping"

But when I saw this thread I also assumed he meant buying the same blu-ray twice (repackaged). On blu-ray.com it goes without saying we are double dipping DVD>blu-ray, but I never thought "packaging" was a very high priority issue for that. |

Exactly, double dipping to me would be better represented by purchasing say the original RoboCop, followed by remastered edition, etc... I just don't consider buying two separate formats "double dipping"....

I double dipped and bought the new (slimmer) Planet of the Apes set, which is basically 1 case in a slipbox. The old blu-ray set was 5 separate blu-ray cases in a box, I sold those off individually. But of course I only did that because doing that exchange basically cost me nothing but the time to orchestrate the sales.
I might consider doing that in other instances, for space saving or where I didn't like the old packaging (plus it's probably better to have "fresh" discs, in light of some of the browning/rot issues that have been brought to light lately). But again, I would only do that if I could practically break-even on the exchange. I wouldn't pay $$$ to double dip new/better packaging. If you are talking about DVD's>blu-ray double dip, the upgrade to PQ/AQ is far more important to me than packaging or space saving. However, to clear space I got rid of my old DVD sets like Alien, Matrix, Star Trek, Godfather etc long time ago because I knew I would eventually get them on blu-ray anyway. |
