My first DIY rack, not perfect but functional enough.
Will redo shelves after house purchase next year. Would like to add a round over or chamfered edge, and a different color stain. 60" long 3/4-10 stainless rod, 3/4-10 stainless nuts, stainless washers, 3/4" thick MDF 24" x 21" shelves. Equipment (top to bottom)
![]() Yes Yes I know the wires are a mess, have yet to purchase wire ties. (its on the list) Last edited by Remo; 11-01-2014 at 06:23 PM. |

3/4-10 Stainless rod 60" x 4 total was $162
3/4-10 stainless nuts (50pcs) $22 Stainless washers 3/4"ID x 1.312"OD x 3/32" thick (50pcs) $18 Full sheet of 3/4" MDF $48 (I originally planned for 8 shelves but ened up going with six, I could have went with 3 Project boards precut at 2ft x 4ft and saved $10) Stain (1qt) $11 Total Materials cost $261 TOOLS I bought a 13/16" plunge cut router bit to make the holes in the shelves. I used my plunge router and edge guide to plunge cut the holes in the exact location on every corner on every board. Took half an hour to set it up took 10 minutes to cut 24 holes. This bit cost me $35. I also bought a flush cut router bit $18, to make sure every shelf was exactly the same size.(which they weren't, my table saw isn't the greatest) I picked the smallest shelf and used that as my template for the other shelves. Paint brushes rollers and other misc supplies were about $20. Total project cost $345 |

I'm still rocking this rack. However I've been thinking about building a horizontal version with a frame at the rear to mount the TV for a floating type install. It would be wide enough to also mount my front main speakers as they are bookshelf size along with space for all the HT equipment. It's still in the design phase in my head at the moment. Just a thought.

I built my first one 25+ years ago, didn't even have an computer back then, don't have any pix of those but this was about 15 years ago...
![]() IMG_2886 by Barry, on Flickr Here are some I'm using now, pix taken during/after my recent room renovation... Equipment rack uses 3/4" rod, the shelving is 5/8" rod. Wood is all 1" furniture grade Birch veneer ply. ![]() 2019-06-24_10-01-34 by Barry, on Flickr ![]() 2019-06-27_11-21-07 by Barry, on Flickr ![]() 2019-07-29_12-07-18 by Barry, on Flickr ![]() 2019-07-29_12-07-32 by Barry, on Flickr ![]() 2019-07-29_12-06-38 by Barry, on Flickr ![]() 2019-07-14_07-57-53 by Barry, on Flickr Last edited by Barry_NJ; 08-02-2019 at 02:36 PM. |
