The words "Hitchcock" and "remake" should be banned from sharing a sentence.

There still hasn't been a good Hitchcock remake but Fincher is certainly capable of doing it.

Terrible idea. Unless it's a black comedy remake like Horrible Bosses or Throw Momma From the Train, the original movie should be left alone.

With Fincher and the helm and Affleck starring, I'm all in. This could be one of the best, well actually almost only, good Hitchock remake. Bring it on.

It's my least favorite Hitchcock film. As I thought it was ruined by a ridiculous ending. So this actually has me excited. I would definitely not be as keen if it were one of my favorites.

I would rather see Fincher do something that's not a book or a movie already. But I'm sure he could make it into something good.

What was ridiculous? You mean the part with the carousel? That was great.

Nope, hated that part. It wouldn't have been that bad if the cop wasn't a complete moron. He literally ruined the remainder of the movie for me.

Why? Didn't Hitchcock remade one of his own film, The Man Who Knew Too Much?

It's based on a great Patricia Highsmith novel and a re-adaptation of the novel would be fine by me.

This has already been unoffically remade in Italy in 1971 as The Designated Victim and while the plot stuck close to the original, the feel of the film was totally different and quite interesting in its own right.

I haven't forgotten it, but it's a comedy and really more of a variation which just keeps the central premise while The Designated Victim sticks close enough to the Hitchcock film and the Highsmith novel that it can be considered a proper remake (at least as much as the proposed Fincher version from reading about it). It does put a new spin on the material by setting in in Italy, it has a 70s giallo vibe to it and it ups the homoerotic subtext inherent in the material (and inherent in a lot of Patricia Highsmith's writing).

I also thought I'd bring it up because everybody knows Throw Mommma From the Train while nobody here seems to have heard of The Designated Victim, which was proof that you can successfully remake Strangers on a Train without copying it. It's a great premise which allows for different interpretations which don't necessarily take away from the Hitchcock classic.

Like the original a lot. It works as an old movie, but I feel the plot is too contrived to work in 2015/16. Guessing for Fincher in full Panic Room mode.

Wasn't the Psycho remake enough proof that they suck? You can't remake a Hitchcock film.

Well there was one, but Hitchcock directed it himself.

Maybe you can't (or better "shouldn't") remake a Hitchcock film, but you can re-adapt a novel a Hitchcock film was based on if you do it differently from the way Hitchcock did it.

Yeah but the article said the Hitchcock movie would be the basis, not the book.

Quote:
Though the Hitchcock remake–a Warner Bros library title and an adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel–will be its basis, this film will be contemporary and redefined for the times.
