Default Oppo vs. PS4

I'm looking to buy one or the other in the near future...Should I go with an Oppo or a PS4??...I do watch movies, more than I play video games, but I do like having that option...Will the Oppo really be that much better, to sacrifice having the option to play games as well??..I will be running it through a Pioneer Elite receiver.

Personally, I would go with an Oppo. I would wait on the PS4. The PS4 will eventually have another price drop and right now it's been having too many technical problems, you have to have a PSN paid-for membership to play a lot of the games because of online access compatibility, and there aren't that many games at the moment I am interested in for the PS4. A lot of good games will come to the system but many of the high-profile ones aren't coming for a while... not to mention I personally have a pretty big backlog of PS3 games. I hardly play enough video games and the PS3 still has a huge catalog of good games.

Granted, it depends on what you are looking for. The Oppo units are great if you want the best playback quality for movies possible and also if you are interested in HD audio, analog options, etc. If you own any SACD/DVD-Audio or like HD audio it's going to be a big part of the equation.

Oppo units tend to not fall as significantly in price over time and if you watch a lot more movies than play video games (and it sounds like you are in that group as you haven't purchased a PS4 yet), I think you might be happier with an Oppo and could always purchase a PS4 in a year or two.

If you aren't interested in some of the technical aspects of why an Oppo is better for video or audio, though, a standard Blu-ray player would also be OK. If you do care A LOT about PQ/AQ though, Oppo is pretty much the best option out there.

And it's not like the PS4 is lacking in good games as it is. Multiplatform games are always better on the PS4.

1. PS3 started out at $399. It has now been on sale from many retailers (especially around the Holiday) for around $350 with games bundled inside. As with all video game systems, it is GUARANTEED to eventually have a firm price drop.

2. Yes, 2015 is stacked with games. Are a lot of major titles coming out yet? Perhaps more so than before... but there are also a lot of big titles that aren't even out yet. I'm sure gamers that like a huge variety of games and that play regularly are quite pleased to already have a PS4. The individual in question does not sound like a dedicated gamer. Nor am I.

3. The system has had lots of issues. When it first came out, some people reported dead systems day one. There have been firmware issues which caused malfunctions. The PSN system has been hacked several times. Down-time and maintenance periods have been longer because of the way the PS4 system was integrated. Maybe these don't sound like big issues to you, but for some it might be worth waiting for a lower price and for fewer reported problems with the system.

Quit spreading BS

1. You said "wait for another price drop" which hasn't happened and likely won't until E3 or Black Friday -Christmas and anything you have seen is from the retailer not Sony.

3. Hahahahahaha all electronics have DOA's and Sony is way below their own and the industry failure rate and bwhahahaha the ps4 has never been hacked maybe you are confused because the only hack that happened was almost 4 years ago.

from your two posts it clearly shows you don't know anything about Sony , PSN , PS4 hardware
Or software so just stop trying to throw out nonsense you probably read on polygon or another pro MS site.

PS4 launched with one of the lowest failure rates of any entertainment platform launch ever. Far below industry standards. Furthermore, in most cases the flashing blue light was a handshake problem with the HDMI output. Like that has never happened between a blu ray player and a tv before. Could have been an early firmware issue, who knows at this point? Blu ray players launch with bugs all the time and get updated with firmware. How was X-Men DOFP on your OPPO 93 when it came out a short while ago? Things happen, things change, things get fixed. It doesn't mean you damn your equipment to hell for a hiccup. The PS4 is well built, using cooling systems they developed over the lifespan of the PS3. There is nothing wrong with it. And I was a XBOX 360 only guy in the last generation. I like the console with the best tech under the hood for gaming.

Back on topic. You are better off waiting on the OPPO to see what is available in 4K players at the end of this year. The OPPO is three years old now and doesn't even have standard options like built in Wi-Fi. That is a lot of money to spend on a player when newer and better ones are on the horizon. Including possibly a newer OPPO player. You will kick yourself for not waiting. BTW, there is no newer playstation console on the horizon, which makes that a better long term entertainment investment.

Oppo won't be doing UHD until late 2016 at the earliest.

All the current Oppo players support WiFi and come with a external USB wifi adaptor and cable to place it accordingly for best reception.
Older models
BDP-103 came out 10-03-2012 still available
BDP-105 came out 11-16-2012 (discontinued)
Current models
BDP-103D came out 10-01-2013
BDP-105D came out 1-13-2014

So please tell me again how these players are 3 years old, as you need to get the facts correct IMHO.

First 4K native players need to have loaders that support 66/100 GB UHD media. Also need HEVC decoders SOC thats shipping in quantity. Then you need native 4Kx2K video processing that outputs using HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 interfaces. I serious doubt the Christmas 2015 we will see anything but something rushed along mediocre access/loading times players, wait until you get some impressions/reviews before buying a 4K native player.

Currently its looking like late 2016 to early 2017 for next Oppo players.

Both the current 103D/105D provide 4Kx2K that offers 4K/60 Hz using a 4:2:0 YCbCr color space. Which can be useful for current BD content on a UDTV if the display doesn't provide comparable functionality.

If we are talking about blu ray players I really don't care if it has wifi in it. See the problem with people today they want all these apps and you don't need them if you purchased a good tv because they have those apps inside. I buy a blu Ray player for blu Rays not streaming capabilities.

If you want a blu Ray player purchase a Oppo if you want a multi-media device purchase a PS4 or Xbox 1

Would love to get region free, as I buy lots of steels and sets from all over the world.
Picture and sound quality are top priority

It sounds like you are going to enjoy the oppo. AFAIK there is not a region free mod for the PS4. If you don't have an HTPC to play your imports you will find yourself looking for another blu-ray player int he near future that will international blu's.

Personally I believe in spending money once. If you buy the PS4 you will be buying another blu-ray player because the PS4 does not meet your criteria.

Oppo is a highly regarded company and a usually a 1 stop shop. Not many companies out there are still producing firmware updates for older models etc Nor offer out of warranty support.

Oppo does that and more.

I have the BDP-103 and have a region locked BD from the UK - how do I get it to play on the Oppo? Is there a code or something I have to input via the remote?
