Rushmore

Hi, quick question for people that know about licenses/rights etc. I know Rushmore has a Criterion release in the U.S, but why doesn't it have a release in the U.K? It seems like a crazy situation to me. Is there any chance someone like Masters of Cinema would release it?

Question also applies to Bottle Rocket and Tenenbaums.

Bottle Rocket is a no, I believe freelancer Michael B confirmed Sony UK don't licence films out, and I can't see them producing their own master...

I think I used the wrong terminology, sorry. I meant I couldn't see them producing a disc, not that I couldn't see them producing a HD master.

In short, Sony have the rights to Bottle Rocket and Disney have Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic (my favourite). So unless they recognise the increasing popularity of Wes Anderson (like Fox did by releasing The Darjeeling Limited over here eventually) it's unlikely we'll see them.

Sucks, cause Rushmore and Life Aquatic are particular favourites of mine. Bottle Rocket would be joyous on blu-ray too. Of course, all of his films would.

The Criterion discs are all great, and whilst you might see UK releases of the films eventually don't hold your breath about getting the wonderful features and packaging design - the Rushmore DVD was a really sorry affair in the UK.

Isn't this a Touchstone, so Disney title globally ? If so don't hold your breathe on a UK or European BD. Back in the day Disney did release a few of the titles they licenced to Criterion on DVD, as SE DVDs themselves in UK including The Rock and Armageddon which featured the Criterion extras.
Disney probably see this as back catalogue non animated so are uninterested in releasing and they don't seem to licence titles to others in UK.

You have more hope of seeing Bottle Rocket as with it being Sony there is a chance of a BD in Germany and Italy even if not in UK as Sony UK less interested in back catalogue than their European businesses. Sony Europe have released BDs of quite a few films where the US rights have been passes to Criterion, Twilight Times etc

You aware how annoying people that post that are, right? Just because you're technology savvy doesn't mean other people and it doesn't mean you need to annoying about it. (I have a multi-region blu-ray player and it still pisses me off when people do this.)

LOL...when did I say I'm "technology savvy"???

I had the exact issue like moc_moc_a_moc.
I purchased a multi zone Blu-ray player because of Wes Anderson Criterion Blu-rays initially. Since then I purchased quite a number of other region locked Blu-rays. It's really great not having to worry about region codes anymore.

What exactly is annoying about that?...wow...just...wow.

Depends, BV have licenced the extras before from Criterion, and Dltd had most of the extras on the UK disc from Fox

I'm not saying it's impossible, and probably much more likely in the wake of Grand Budapest Hotel, but AFAIK the Criterion DVD was the only decent release of Rushmore anywhere and it's now OOP but still nobody has licensed the extras. Fox probably have an ongoing deal with Anderson/Criterion, I think we're all expecting Criterion to release GBH down the line, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to then see Fox release a UK blu with the licensed extras to get us to double-dip. I'd be very happy to see better relationships and licensing, whilst I've got a modest Criterion blu collection I'm never going to be able to pick them up for a fiver in a sale like I can UK releases!

And whilst I agree that region coding is rubbish and we should press studios not to use it, and not to release shabby versions in other regions, the practicality is I can shout at distributors until I'm blue in the face and pray they see enough financial incentive to have a better go at releases, or I can spend a bit more on a region free player and solve my problem today.
I don't think we're going to ever see as many releases on blu as we've had on DVD, with the forces of online distribution fighting against it, so I'm happier to grab what I can from wherever I can now!

I’m surprised you guys are finally get this. I figured it would of been one of Criterion’s first in the UK. Now every Wes Anderson film is Region B friendly.
