United Kingdom High Hopes Blu-ray - 4DVD - 13th April 2015

High Hopes is being re-released by 4DVD on the 13th April 2015:

High Hopes Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

I'm going to wait to pre-order it to make sure it's a new transfer. I was put off buying the previous release by Fabulous Films as the two people who reviewed it said it was a terrible release

According to the new cover, this is 'Remastered & Restored':

http://www.amazon.co.uk/High-Hopes-B.../dp/B00T84AVOO

Sounds good to me! Will likely be £8 again like Secrets & Lies, I'm guessing. Keep 'em coming 4DVD!

I hope they release more Leigh but also some of their other titles...remastered versions of David Lynch's The Straight Story, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Danny DeVito's Death to Smoochy, Steven Soderbergh's The Limey, Jane Campion's Holy Smoke, Bill Forsyth's Local Hero, Gus Van Sant's Gerry, Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine, Kevin Smith's Dogma...assuming they still have exclusive rights?

As for titles they already release on blu-ray that could do with a remaster (I assume...not heard anything great about them)...obviously Leigh's Life Is Sweet, but also Walter Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries, Jonathan Glazer's Sexy Beast, Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave and Asif Kapadia's The Warrior amongst others. I don't know if they'll bother with those though...

I got this and thought it looked very good, i've not seen the first Blu-Ray but i've read that it was terrible, this disc is not terrible and is a huge step up from the DVD i have, there's no extras but the film is very well presented in 1.77 ratio, 1080/24fps and uncompressed audio

I bought the old version on Saturday in Fopp for £5 thinking it was the newly restored version. Didn't open it because I noticed when adding it to the collection it was a bad looking version. I'm gonna trade it in and pay the difference for the new one if they have it.

There's a listing for Career Girls as well on the same date (Career Girls), with a similar message: "Created from the newly Restored Director-Approved 4k Digital Transfer, supervised by Cinematographer Dick Pope", so presumably they have actually gone back to High Hopes.

Also says "Two newly remastered short films directed by Mike Leigh: The Short & Curlies - starring Alison Steadman and David Thewlis (1987, 18 mins) and A Sense of History - starring Jim Broadbent (1992, 26 mins) and not previously available in the UK" - both are on other releases, and the latter is available in the UK on Topsy-Turvy.

High Hopes is my favourite Leigh film so a new release is very welcome, would be nice to have some extras though. Great news about Career Girls too, that fills one of the last big gaps in his filmography!

I imagine they're just reissuing the High Hopes disc from 2015 (and 2020) with new artwork, I'd be surprised if they bothered to author a complete new disc. Perhaps they'll add a booklet or something though? Since Career Girls has extras that'll likely be the disc they've funnelled all the extras into.

Curious that Film 4 have started releasing stuff again themselves. A shame they can't/won't upgrade some titles though (e.g. they reissued Death to Smoochy and Buffalo Soldiers last year, but both are DVD only still). I'd imagine a label like BFI or Indicator could do wonders with some of them.

The short films are at least more than the DVDs of Career Girls has had, which has been limited to stills gallery and trailer (though Curlies appears on that disc in the DVD boxset.) A Sense of History is presented as 1080i on the Topsy-Turvy release (could be an upscale?) so maybe they could have done a HD scan as happened with Curlies.

It was an upscale, not the best PQ (low resolution, ghosting etc.), seemingly sourced and cropped from a transmission copy - it also appeared on the Secrets and Lies Blu-ray from Film4. The Short and Curlies looked great on the BFI's recent Naked release (though I was less sure about the new 1.78:1 aspect ratio), if the same could be done for A Sense of History, it'll be a worthy upgrade.

Super excited for Career Girls to finally get a Blu! Will pick up the rerelease if anyone says it’s an improvement on the current releases.

The reissue of High Hopes looks very similar to the previous one in terms of artwork, though the BBFC certs are different, the scale of the central image has shifted, and it claims to be remastered.
