I think, and I'm just guessing, that a big part of it is streamlining the OS to reduce the overall memory requirements so they can get in-game XMB to work without pinching developers.

the downloadable bowling game has it all ready (a developer answered about the jukebox seen in one of the pics as being the access to your own music), so I think it's already in 2.00 firmware, only developers need to put it in games now (or update games like Ridge racer and Motorstorm)

It is available to put in the game at their own discretion. The fact that Sony is going to make this a universal feature in every game will satisfy many consumers. I personally don't mind it not being there much.

I'm pretty sure you won't see in-game XMB until Home is released.

Please please please please please please please please please let this come ASAP.
Messaging friends in-game is extremely important - it's absurdly annoying that I can't respond to a friend's invitation for one game while playing another without stopping what I'm doing. |

Currently, the games can call up OS features/functions. What we're looking for, is something more akin to how the Blade works. Where the interface stays loaded in memory and can over-ride game render. And of course, potential rework how the sound bus works so you can mix the sound-streams properly. The big thing I see is just making sure that they can reserve enough memory for the XMB to function without stepping into memory games may have addressed... |

This is more than likely, exactly correct. Each update decreases the memory required for the OS, so they are probably trying to find a happy medium with the memory usage and the future developer usage.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I am absolutely amazed that at this point in console gaming, memory seems to still be a bottleneck. Has the cost of memory not come down at all over the last 10+ years to allow companies like Sony, MS, and Nintendo to include copius amounts into their hardware?!? I look at the PS3 and for as awesome as it is, I can't help but think that just a few more mb of memory would've been sooooooo huge! It's like you're taking a Ferrari for a spin but it doesn't have quite enough gas in it to push it's top speed!
