Default Moving DVDs into smaller cases?

Has one one done this? Like, putting DVDs in unmaked bluray/HDDVD cases? Grouping films and whatnot

I'm thinking about doing that, but I don't know what to do with the excess covers. I dont want to throw them out because thats a waste.

Has anyone else done this? Does it save that much room?

No, my DVDs are stored in their original DVD cases, to differenciate them from the blu-rays, and the HD-DVDs.

As said above, I will alway keep my DVDs in their original cases to help differentiate them from my blus. I'm a stickler for original packaging and don't like to modify things. But to each their own, whatever makes you happy...that's what's important.

I also like to keep my DVDs and blurays differentiated by keeping them in their original cases.

When I get a bluray that I already have on DVD, I transfer the bluray disc and its artwork into a dual bluray case and put the DVD in the second spot. This way, I only have one case but both formats of the movie with no additional space taken up. I just pitch the old DVD case, because there's nothing you can really do with them.

The thickness of a bluray case is 13mm versus the thickness of 14mm for a DVD case, so, yes, you'd be saving room but not a whole lot. Speaking for myself, it wouldn't be worth the headache and expense to save such a small amount of room.

I use thinner DVD cases. Still differentiated, but less shelf space.

I always leave mine DVD & Blu in their original cases and take care with them...I have been selling come of my DVDs on eBay to upgrade to Blu-ray and many are selling for more than the cost of the Blu-ray which only means I get to buy more...

If not in original case, I could sell them at all but they would be worth a fraction of their value intact....

I know people are going to think I'm crazy but I put all my DVDs in a big CD case so now I only have 5 cases that take up minimal space. I used to keep all the cases but after awhile it got ridiculous how much space these DVDs were taking up. I kept all the sleeves for a couple years but then one day decided to throw them out. I keep all my blus in their original case and keep them on the shelf with my cases of DVDs. It was a lot worse space wise but I got rid of over half my DVD collection that was eaisly pushing a couple thousand. I guess the only thing I miss is probably the Disney cases but oh well the space is worth it.

All my DVDs (and HD-DVDs) are stored in single-disc CD binders to save space - only my blu-rays are in cases. Space-saving is key when you live in a small space like I do.

Nope. I have made some combo packs by swapping out a Blu-Ray case for a movie with one that holds more discs and popping in the older DVD edition of the same movie, if I already own it.

Otherwise my Blu-Rays are in Blu-Ray cases/packaging, and any DVDs (that have not been shifted into combo packs as described above) are in their DVD cases/packaging.

That being said, I have "toyed" with the idea of making some exceptions to this, but I just haven't gone so far as to do anything about it. The biggest area where I think about doing this is with some TV show season sets.

For instance, In the cases of some shows like Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, and My Name is Earl, only a single season of the show was ever released on Blu-Ray. I have those particular individual season on Blu-Ray, but all of the other season sets on DVD. And in some cases, it wasn't even the first or last season, but rather just one somewhere in the middle that got released and didn't sell well enough to justify (in the studio's eyes) future releases on Blu-Ray... such as How I Met Your Mother Season 4.

Currently I have the Blu-Ray seasons with my other Blu-Ray, and the DVD season sets with my DVDs, with there being arbitary gaps in the numbering.

In those instances, I have thought about putting the Blu-Ray sets in DVD cases and just putting them with the other season sets. But I have yet to "pull the trigger" on it, as the idea of having Blu-Rays in DVD cases kind of bugs me. And I only like putting DVDs in Blu-Ray cases in the instances of making combo packs, but not by themselves.

In some other instances when there's more of an even split between the releases on two different formats, it doesn't bother me as much. For instance, Smallville Season 1-5 were only available on DVD (I think 5 came out on HD-DVD at one point, but I don't have it nor plan to buy it), and Season 6 forward was made available on both DVD and Blu-Ray. Since there's more of an even split and there's not one or two "lone" seasons separated from the rest, I'm less inclined to bother trying to combine them into consistent packaging.

it's a good idea to put DVD's and BD's into one dual case when same movies on the disc. I will do this for my collection.

Nope. DVD and Blu-ray stay in their own type of cases. My DVD's keep significantly dropping as I upgrade each title, so I don't have to worry about so much space. I currently only use 13 shelves for DVD's. What I did do was put my TV shows into regular size DVD cases to save space. It didn't save as much as I would have hoped, but one shelf was better than nothing.

I keep all of my physical media (Blu-ray, DVD, CD, Cassette) in their original packaging.

That's something I always wanted to do with a few of my DVDs. I'd like to move them to Scanavo Criterion cases. Only problem would be regarding series or TV shows that have more than 4 discs, since Criterion never made cases that hold 5-10 discs.

Im surprised no ones made criterion style 5-10 disc cases. Does Criterion hold a patent on that design?

I usually stick my DVDs into the blu-ray cases when I upgrade, keep DVDs in their original cases otherwise. For some I will put the DVD in a paper sleeve and put that in the case others I will use empty purchased double or triple cases to put them in with the Blu-ray and its sleeve.

Been considering this as well. I really need to come up with a better plan on how to have better peace of mind with excess dvds. There's a bit of resentment in the past from when I had most of my 90s cd collection in binders and then either later missed having them in jewel cases or they were tougher to sell as an incomplete product. It certainly had its pros and cons. The minimalism of everything in a binder meant storage and transportation was a breeze, but I also got nervous to carry it anywhere since it could be lost/stolen.

I've done some combinations and re-packs but I've come to not like all of them. As I curate my collection and make space, I've been taking some back out of the combo packs.

Like, I found a 5 disc set at a thrift store (some Hannah Montana thing) and I gave away the discs and I put the Evil Dead movies (original and remake) plus the 3 disc Anchor Bay DVD all in it, but I missed seeing that big blue box on the shelf so I took it apart and put everything back in their regular cases.

I do have several titles in thin cases that I'm okay with, as long as the spine artwork is still legible.

Most of my DVDs and Blu-rays are in Hipce cases. That said, certain titles are not. Of those, I've been repackaging Golden Age of Hollywood films lately into 2 and 3 disc Criterion style blu-ray cases. I really like these cases as they don't take up as much space as a DVD cases, yet uses the entries case for cover art unlike a traditional blu-ray case. The only issue is however that they are hard to find.

While most of these cases are being filled with blu-ray discs, some of them are DVDs of films not yet on blu-ray. If those titles get a blu-ray release, then I'll trade them out, but if not, then they stay. If the cases were not so hard to find, I'd think about putting more discs in them.

Do these really exist? I've found the existence of a 4 disc case, but the place I found it is out of stock. As it is, they take forever to ship!

Smaller cases? You could use plastic sleeves. It can't get much thinner than that.

I own various copies of the Halloween films, so I printed custom artwork for each film and put all of the various releases in each case rather than having 20+ cases.
