Is this a trick question? Because the movie had an incredible soundtrack and mix?

Ummm No, The question is there because it was NOT in Dolby TrueHD or DTS HDMA. After all the controversy about HD DVD not being able to to have the new level soundtracks, I felt this was a weird statement for the Hi Def Awards to be making.

My thoughts exactly. It's my understanding that the HD-DVD copy of Transformers has identical audio to the DVD version. Now I'm not saying it isn't a decent soundtrack because I have the DVD and it sounded great (though I'm not sure my neighbours appreciated it at 11pm ), but it isn't hi-def audio, it's SD audio so it shouldn't be eligible. Just because it's on a hi-def disc (though as it's HD-DVD it's doing a disservice to the term hi-def ) doesn't make it hi-def. If I rip a DVD and write it to a Blu-ray it's doesn't make it a hi-def film does it?

I think you might've understood wrong. The Dolby Digital-Plus track isn't a port from the DVD, it's an actual 1.5mbps track compared to the 448kbps on the DVD.

...Best soundtrack based on what though?

I'm sure it sounds really good (haven't heard it myself) b/c this is an action movie biased kind category and action movies typically use more of the soundstage, but are they grading them on the soundtrack itself or how well it was implemented on the hddvd with the codec they chose?

It's going to be really tedious hearing about this for the next month from the "good enough" hddvd crowd and from the easily paniced blu fans.

other than that, BD kinda killed it though.... But this whole Transformers thing is crazy. It sounds good BUT, I'm willing to bet, and even Pete Bracke is willing to bet it could have sounded better with High Res audio. But the DD+ is pretty nice, I still get chills when I'm at work and I demo the scene towards the end where the Truck autobot jumps over the girl at the Tank decepticon....I dont know there names as I dont won the movie...waiting for BD version! But, you know the scene! Awesome every time! But it would be clearer and the bass deeper in PCM I think.

It does have high res audio, but I'm assuming you mean lossless. I don't know, it sounded as good as some of the lossless tracks out there, I was definitely happy with it.

A high bitrate DD+ track can sound quite good.

Wouldn't that depend. A 24 bit 1.5mbps DD+ track could rival a 16 bit PCM track. I thought the Transformers DD+ track definitely sounded just as good as some 16 bit PCM tracks...but that's just me.

Soundtrack isn't all about compression or technical crap. A lot of it is how good the sound effects and music and dialog tracks are tracked and mixed in post production. A good sound tack is a good sound track reguardless of Dolby, Lossless, or Uncompressed pcm. Could it have been a bit better otherwise? .. sure

Sound quality is sound quality, great soundtrack you bet, but this is the HI DEF AWARDS and all factors should be taken into account.

I think Transformers soundtrack on HDDVD is remarkable. For a Lossy soundtrack to sound lossless takes something special. Is it the best soundtrack out there...uhhhh not so much.
