Baz Luhrmann ( Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby and my personal favorite Strictly Ballroom ) lands a 13 episode deal with Netflix for his 1970's Bronx based series The Get Down. Shawn Ryan ( The Shield, The Unit ) is Executive Producer on the series. Baz initially shopped this series around in late 2013 but to no avail. Fox would have been ideal but it has Empire.
At the moment the series is slated for release in early 2016. The breakdown of The Get Down.. The Get Down will focus on 1970s New York — broken down and beaten up, violent, cash strapped — dying. Consigned to rubble, a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them — except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. From Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene; from CBGBs to Studio 54 and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, The Get Down is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco — told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world … forever. |

Daredevil is incredible for a "TV Show". Hell, not just a tv show but might be the best Marvel has to offer. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is fantastic. Real laugh out loud hilarity. I've heard House of Cards is pretty damn good and the same with Orange is the New Black. Right now, it seems, Netflix can do no wrong and even with that short synopsis, I'm looking forward to more from Netflix. And hopefully Luhrmann's colorful creativity shows through in this series.

![]() Early reviews are coming in on the first 3 episodes released to critics. They are mostly saying the same thing, the 90 minute pilot is very much Luhrmann style. The pilot was not that strong but the second and third episode drops the Luhrmann style and becomes really good. |

The first episode is the worst of all the episodes. The following episodes you would never know we're done by Baz. Give it least 2 more episodes to reconsider it. I really enjoyed it, but yes the first episode is not that good.

Hmmm maybe I will give it another try, but it is just 'gangsta' tripe that we have seen a million times before or is it more about the music side of things?

Two episodes in right now, and while I absolutely LOVE certain portions, other portions of the show just seem totally unnecessary and not that interesting. The girl character, Mylene or whatever, is incredibly selfish and her friends are dumb as hell. I just don't care about her. Although, even she's tolerable compared to Cadilac and his dumb gangster mom.
The violence is also not really fitting with the tone of the overall show. I get why it's there, but it's just to ally jarring to have one scene be super fun, and them figuring out the get down, to cut to the torture and murder of an eight year old. Especially when (so far, I'm only episode 2 like I said) the criminal aspect seems like it could have just been omitted entirely from the show, as it hasn't really added anything besides furthering the development of characters I don't care about. |
