Default comment threads on news posts

Lately I've noticed a fair amount of trolling in the comments threads attached to each news item. I think the mods here do a fine job running the asylum, but since there's no easy way to police those news comment threads---no report buttons, no reflection in users' post histories---it seems that some folks have registered solely to post the same old drek in an area of this site where accountability is limited.

So I ask you moderators: are you content with the rate-a-comment self-policing feature? Or, if faced with the fourth FUDdy comment from someone who has yet to post in an actual forum thread, should we directly message a mod with a complaint?

I like being able to devalue an inappropriate comment into virtual invisibility. But the repeat offenders tend to get me down, especially when their comments would warrant suspension or banning if they weren't keeping such low profiles by avoiding the general forum.

I think that we are lucky here on this site with the patroling that occurs. I think that if people get out of line, for the most part we all police ourselfs and if a report needs to be turned in, it usually happens pretty quick.

Those that come to start trouble normally get caught pretty quick and shut down.

I think there's definitely room for improvement on the feedback comments, in the meantime it would certainly help if you PM'd with the details on those troublemakers.

As a first time poster , I am disgtusted they way this forum is managed, first time I see a forum in 11 years of surfing the internet where each post policed before posted. It may be good for the punks, but to a serious person this is too annoying. Especially when his posts suddenly vanish and cant even be read, what gives, the only 2 posts that I wrote that I wanted to show up, do not show up. F RETARDED

You need to find a new site. Your posts are a waste of time and you clearly have issues. No need to bring it here.
