Default Region free players - expensive or hard to get?

I keep seeing people ask if a certain Blu-ray is region free or if it will play both A & B in every other thread, so I'm wondering why so many collectors confine themselves to one region? Is it because they are hard to find where you live or too expensive to buy? Any other reason?

First thing I did when switching formats was getting a region free player. I would have missed out on so many great titles if I had confined myself to just one region and then pray some titles released in a different region zone would play on my region.

Cause apparently it is too much to ask that the player you choose to toss your discs in costs more than 5 of those discs...

People definitely seem to need to learn to prioritise. If you keep banging your head against the region wall, then save up and get a region free player. It doesn't have to be ultra crap or Oppo; there are options in between.

Agreed.

I have some modded ones that were around $200 and work just fine with a pretty good picture quality output. You can look around for deals at too many places to be confined to one or the other.

I have a region A Blu-ray Disc player. It's not broken, so why replace it? I'd consider throwing out a perfectly good BD player, just to replace it with a region-free one, to be a waste of money. I also would be ridiculed by my family if I did that. My father would call it "pissing my money away" and my brother would call me an "idiot" and I'd never live it down.

People are free to do what they want with their money.... unless you live in my family.

Why would you have to throw it away? Put it on a 2nd television, sell it on eBay or keep it as a spare...etc.

I've been region free for 2 years now I think.there is no way I would ever go back to a single region . I started with a cheap Insignia that I used specifically for region free capabilities while using a Sony as my region A player. The Insignia started having some problems with the disc tray opening so I just recently bought a Sony region free from 220 electronics and replaced both players with it.
