Germany is region B :

The upcoming local release will most likely either be a port of the Shout disc, or the German master with a different encode.

The standard German version was 6.97 euro about a week or so ago, and the 3 disc set was 8.97 euro earlier in the year, that's about as cheap as you'll ever be able to get them. Why is it important for the English track to be the default track?

I don't believe it will be a port of the Image disc. Either way it will be sourced from one of these two masters:

It's simply going to come down to the encode, fingers crossed it's not inferior.

Is it known which master this release uses? I've gone looking for this locally - the Umbrella version is available very cheaply ($13), but around the corner I found a copy of the Second Sight version for $30. I'd like to know which version I should buy!

The Second Sight. It has a truckload of extras that the local doesn't. And the local version likely uses an older master (probably the old Image release from the US), as is often the trend here with Umbrella, Cinema Cult, etc.

Thanks. Would be good to know what transfer it is - the Second Sight is actually $34 - it's a pretty big leap over the $13 Umbrella - would feel better about it if I knew it was a better transfer...

I'd place bets on the SS having the better transfer. I'm fairly sure I heard somewhere that it's the same scan as the US Shout Factory version. I do know that the Umbrella is only a BD25 with stuff crammed on it, whereas the SF & SS are BD50's. A BD50 is immediately going to give you superior picture quality just based on that alone. If you really want the best version overall, with better A/V specs and more features, then spending a bit extra is going to do it. You know the old saying; "You get what you pay for"...
