The trailer for the long-delayed sixth Paranormal Activity film (seventh, if you count the non-canon Japanese spinoff) is finally out.
The preview states, probably in response to complaints/jokes that the series revolves around watching nothing for long periods of time, that "For the first time, you will see the activity." They're doing this by taking a page from Fatal Frame and introducing a special camera that can see and record ghosts and demons and other such supernatural energy. It also promises "Every secret will be revealed." Finally, it confirms that the movie is being released in 3D. It looks interesting - more interesting than the last couple, anyway - even if the whole "seeing the activity" thing amounts to black CGI blobs inserted into the footage. That said, even as someone who LOVES 3D, I have to question its use here. It's still a found-footage flick, and this special camera they're using is a VHS camcorder from the 80s, which clearly doesn't record in 3D. It seems like another level of distracting artifice. The movie is slated for release on October 23, towards the end of what's turning out to be a crowded month. |

Interesting.
This actually looks better than the series, which as much of a fan of ghost documentaries and ghost movies that I am, I wasn't a fan of this series mostly because of the long scenes of stationary content intentionally to prime the viewer for the eventually ghosts. If Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension 3D is filmed in 3D and/or with strong 3D, I'll give it a chance. |

Still curious to find out if most of the footage in these trailers will actually be in the movie itself. PA3's trailers had scenes which were never in the actual cut of the film, it was almost a completely different movie altogether (which was a damn shame, because the trailers' scenes were far more effective).
I'll still check out the film even if it is godawful (although it can't be worse than PA4 ..... or can it?). |

I watched Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension at midnight as October 30 turned into Halloween. It was one of the few remaining 3D horror films I had never seen, consistently moving it to the back of the queue due to the 3D being segmented with only ~18 minutes of stereo. It turns out, both the 3D and the film quickly surpassed my low expectations.
The 3D segments are unusual in that they are not wholly separate from the 2D footage, so the entire film must be watched with glasses on. Rather, the 3D appears at random, flashing every few minutes, linked to the appearance of demonic activity. Sometimes the entire image is in 3D, sometimes only scattered portions of objects, and sometimes only the CGI ghost particles. This radical variation, made possible only by post-conversion, creates an intentional visual unease that I had never experienced before from 3D! The image often starts flat and eases into the presence of depth. The strength of the depth is usually satisfying but also varies from sequence-to-sequence and sometimes shot-to-shot. Pop-out moments (and surround sound activity) create numerous jump scares. CGI ghost particles extend pretty far out of the screen on the regular. I have a hard time recommending this to everyone as most people seem put off by not having the whole movie in 3D. But I found the use of 3D creatively unique and extremely effective for this story. The movie is about a family that moves into a new house over the Christmas holidays and discovers a "spirit camera" in a box left by the former owners. They get the camera rolling and find that a demon has invaded their house and, of course, latched onto their young daughter. I am not overly familiar with the structure and tropes of found footage horror and have not seen the rest of the Paranormal Activity franchise. Even so, the direction was still a little predictable and convenient but also good enough to keep me tense for the majority of the zippy 1.5-hour runtime. The jump scares got me, and the POV experience with the demon floating around the house successfully creeped me out. I live in a house that creaks particularly loud when the wind is rustling outside, and the film admittedly had me jumping at some real life noises too! Horror and Noir alternative-genre Holiday films particularly fascinate me. I really appreciate the emotional delivery of sadness during a traditionally joyous time. There is a Christmas tree or some sort of decoration in every other shot, so it is absolutely 3D to rewatch mid-December during the Christmas Advent (specifically set Dec. 12-18). I can understand how this film may be too predictable for some and not "3D" enough for others, but I kind of loved it. Movie - 3.5/5 3D - 3/5 Last edited by BleedOrange11; 11-01-2024 at 11:30 PM. |
