And this is why people get confused/upset when they shop at a B&M store:
http://www.ketknbc.com/home/ticker/12293886.html "By Crystal Kobza TYLER-- DVD players are a popular Christmas present but with all the new technology, how do you know which one is your best buy? With the technology advances made in the way you watch television and movies in your home. The war between Blu-ray and HD technology is going strong. But Don Martin with Best Buy says.... don't get rid of that old DVD player just yet. if you're looking for a cheaper way to upgrade it-- look into buying a DVD- up convert. Martin said, "The up convert basically take a regular disk, spins its faster, processes it all at a higher rate and turns it into near hi-definition." Up converts run about $80. But if your are willing to put some money into your home entertainment, Martin say the actual difference between Blu-ray and HD is just the thickness of the disk. Martin said, "All you need to know is that Blu- ray can actually hold more but is a thinner disk. HD cant hold as much but Blu-ray will be a little bit more expensive in the long run." The estimated price difference between the two is about $50. But if money doesn't matter, there is another way to to decide which one to take home. Martin said, "One of the easiest tells is if you have kids." And what your kids are watching at home. Martin says take a stroll through the movie isle and see what companies are using which technology. Martin say if your kids are Disney fans, go with Blu-ray. Another example, Fox is exclusive to HD. Martin said, "A good thing to note though you don't need to throw away your old DVD collection because Blu-ray and HD can play regular DVD's." And a finally note, to help in your decision, Martin says both Blu-ray and HD are high definition. Meaning in the long run both create the same quality picture. And the experts tell us, Blu-ray disk cannot be played in HD players. And vice versa, so before buying you do need to figure out what fits your family best." The comments at the bottom of the news are hilarious because EVERYONE caught the big FOX mistake, LOL ![]() Last edited by Living Near Shamu; 12-10-2007 at 03:49 PM. |

I'm not convinced the writer of that piece even knows what "Blu-Ray" and "HD-DVD" are.

Did this guy really make thickness of the disc a buying criteria? What is this crapola about how fast the disc spins for a better picture?
This is almost as bad as the time a friend told me he heard a woman on the job say a color laser printer prints using different color lasers. ![]() I have to stop assuming everything I read is written by a competent person. It's messing with my mind. Picard: "Mr Worf, Fud-filters full power!" Worf: "No effect Captain. The Fud-Borg keep spinning the truth and changing their story. They are getting through." Picard: "Fire blu-phasers, dammit. FIRE!" |

![]() I DO have an entire series I wrote called "Star Shack". It is ST:TNG working electronics retail at Star Shack. (Based on some true experiences when I worked at Radio Shack.) It has a cult following at a popular anti-radioshack web page. ![]() I considered posting it somewhere in the blu-forum, but it has nothing to do with blu-ray. I will say this much, I gave Picard a super "Kirk" ego as far as his mouth goes. The characters are frikken hysterical and outlandishly plausible plotlines will give you many a laugh. This all being based on feedback, and not just my opinion. Thinking of selling it as an ebook. ![]() TransFUDers. Not my best work, but you should like it. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ht=transfuders Last edited by tron3; 12-10-2007 at 11:21 PM. |

I've actually been into the Best Buy they are talking about, as I grew up about a 2 hour drive South from Tyler. My ex-g/f has worked in that Best Buy for like 2 years, and I can vouch on a personal experience level that they are all retards. Every employee there goes to a 3rd-rate local branch of the University of Texas, and because of it thinks they are the upper-class, know it all pseudo-Ivy Leaguers of the region.
Having said that, I am not as alarmed about Best Buy providing them false information as I am the "journalist" who reports and writes this shite for consumers to read. The lady who wrote this article took mis-information to the next level. It's clear her only research into the subject was calling the local BB home theatre specialist, who we all know is the end-all be-all of electronics knowledge!! ![]() Luckily, the article was generally recommending upconvert DVD players as opposed to HD-DVD players. It still sucks, but I'd rather people buy up DVD than be wrongfully coaxed into believing that HD-DVD was superior. |

just goes to show how uninformed retail employees are to spread such BS to a news channel. BBy and other retailers NEED to properly educate their employees or do not let them sell the discs, LET ALONE TALK TO A NEWS REPORTER!

up convert players hurt HD DVD more because some people assume their up-convert players are HD DVD players and attempt to buy software for it. LOL guess what happens LOL
Blu-Ray on the other hand is not called DVD and does not add to this confusion. |

Has anyone been able to find contact information for someone at this station? This used to be my local NBC network a few years back and I would absolutely LOVE to write them a strongly worded email about this completely misinformed, untrue article.
