Default Question about HDMI Audio

I just got in the Onkyo 605 and I hooked it up to my upconverting DVD player running the video and audio through HDMI. Well the audio is very low so I went back to Digital Optical and it sounds great. Should I just leave it with the Digital Optical?

I am not 100% percent on this but I am pretty sure that you need to use the HDMI for the uncompressed audio if your receiver can handle it. If you use optical for uncompressed audio, you will only get left and right. I am sure another member should be able to confirm this.

Yeah, but a DVD doesn't have uncompressed audio, so it shouldn't matter, right?

Helps if I actually TOTALLY read the post properly. Standard DVD does not discriminate between optical or HDMI.

It shouldn't matter (optical audio is fine) for SD DVDs.

Oh ok, but I wonder why DTS didn't work with HDMI on my receiver.

I've just started to consider getting a new receiver and thought about the 605, so I'm interested as to why had this problem. I imagine it is a receiver settings issue.

I have a Samsung LCD with 2 hdmi inputs and one output -- so I'm going to use one input from cable hdtv, and one for the DVD. My question is about Audio -- my receiver also has HDMI. Should i go from cable to the receiver then to the tv -- or directly from cable to the tv -- and use component cables from the cable box to the receiver just for audio. Or maybe there's a better solution i didn't think of. Thanks a lot

Component cables are for video only, run a coax digital cable for DD or DTS.

Maybe you have some sort of night listening mode active (it's basically a compressor to reduce dynamic range), that could explain the higher volume on DD over optical.

Can your DVD player decode DTS? If not, maybe it cannot stream it over HDMI, only PCM (the decoded DD) but optical does pass it through. That's all just guessing though; check your manual on decoding and passing capabilities of your player.

I have the Oppo DV-981HD. Well when I used Optical the receiver said DTS and it sounded great, but when I was using just HDMI I didn't say anything and it sounded very low. I don't think it's a night mode cause 2 minutes before that I was watching Blu Ray Pirates 3 on my PS3 and it sounded great!!!

I have a related question: Am I losing audio data with my current setup (I think the answer is yes)?

PS3 HDMI --> HDTV Coax Digital --> Receiver

So basically, my PS3 is connected to my HD via HDMI, and then the HDTV is connected to my receiver via a Coax Digital connection.

Also, to the point of this thread, I have noticed that I get far more volume from my DVD Optical Digital connection to my receiver than from my HDTV. I think the connection type plays some role in that, or possibly the output stages on HDTV's are not as good as DVD players, etc. are.

I would generally not advice to hook it up like this. Use the HDMI to your TV only for picture and the optical out directly to the receiver. First, you don't add any additional delay and second, It's hard to guess what your TV will shove through your optical out when you feed it PCM over HDMI.

My thoughts are that the HDTV is outputting PCM to my receiver directly. By that, I mean that the HDTV volume control has no effect whatsoever on the output level, except that when I position the volume at zero, or mute the HDTV, the sound is "cut" from the receiver as well.

My receiver is an older Onkyo model that does not have HDMI, and I am primarily gaming on my setup, so the HDTV is serving as the audio "hub" in my system for my XBox 360, PS3 and Wii, so it makes sense for me to have a single connection between the HDTV and the receiver. I do know that with videogames I am definitely getting 5.1 surround of some sort. I do have the receiver set for Dolby Pro Logic on the input I am using.

I might consider using an optical connection for the PS3 if I notice audio issues with Blu Ray. I need to sit down with it and see exactly what it is doing with the audio.

So now we know that your player passes the DTS stream over optical and converts the DTS over HDMI. Pirates 3 is no use to compare it to, because it has a PCM track to start with. At this point I would suggest you contact Oppo. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
