Can the PS3 play .mp4 files from data disc?

so im not sure if this is where this thread belongs, but hopefully someone who knows the answer will find it :-)

I have about 60 DVDs ripped onto my hard drive (shhhh ) so I can play them without changing discs and all that. if I burned these movies (.mp4 files) on a single blu-ray disc, and popped it in the ps3, would it be able to play all of these movies?

my intuition says it should....but does anyone know the answer? I guess I could test it first with a data DVD.

u can find all the files that the ps3 can play since 2.0 update i assume if your files are H.264 so it should work first see if it works on a normal dvd disc should matter if it dvd or blu-ray

yeah, I wasn't to concerned about the file types, pretty sure that wouldn't be an issue. I know its sorta counter intuitive in most cases to burn these files to a data DVD to be played on a ps3, but with a 50 GB blu-ray disc I could fit all of my SD movies on one disc. that would be very convenient :-D

i kinda figured someone out there has tried this, but the more I think about it, the chances of that person actually reading this might be low. I will try burning some videos to a data dvd and check it out.

Yes, it can. I've done this with BD25. Just make sure your mp4s have the right codec supported by the PS3.
