Oooooh interesting question... I am surprised by how many films I like have numbers in them!!
I am going to post Lilya 4-ever as my favourite, but it is not a film I enjoy, it is also a film that I doubt will ever see a Blu-ray release (in fact so few of Lukas Moodysson's films are likely to make the transfer given his filming style. His film Show Me Love is in my Top 10 of all time too!!) But I digress. Lilya 4-Ever is an absolutely devastating film and one that is very difficult to shake after watching. It is also sadly based on true life events. It is about 16 year old Lilya, whose Mother leaves her to go to the USA with a new boyfriend promising that she will send for her later. Whilst waiting for this to occur Lilya falls in love with Andrej who promises her a better life in Sweden if she goes with him. Sadly this relationship ends with Lilya becoming victim to an underground sex trade. The film is raw and features an incredible performance by Oksana Akinshina. It is certainly not one that you will want to rewatch anytime soon, but the fact that it has such an impact makes it an important film and one that certainly deserves a lot of the praise it has attracted over the years! If it had to be a film that I enjoy watching, my close second would be 3-Iron (Binjip) an absolutely amazing film by Kim Ki Duk. Given that the film relies almost solely on imagery and character expressions with very little dialog it is a film crying for a better Blu-ray release than the single Taiwanese disc that is out there! ![]() |

ok I will put two, only because I cant really split them overall.
Raise the Red Lantern - An absolute masterpiece and it's a faultless movie, with Gong Li in the role of a lifetime as the fourth bride of a powerful chinese lord in the 1920's. The competition between the wives is tough, as their "master's" attention carries with it power, privileges and status. Impeccably shot, outstandingly acted and excellently directed, this is probably the best contemporary asian film I've seen. The 400 Blows - Easily Francois Truffaut's best film out of what I've seen and one of the true classics of cinema. You could loosely describe it as a "coming of age" film but it completely avoids the usual structure of such films and is a cinematic truimph in almost all departments. I much prefer it something like Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso, which is a little too oversentimental for my liking. |
