Talking 7.1 Surround Sound Effects off of DTS HD Master & Dolby True HD lost?

HI all. Ok i put my PS3 on Linear PCM, then i put my Onkyo905 on DIRECT. Do u guys know that only the left and right speakers with the base box worked. I have a 7.1 surround sound hookup and i put on the FLY & everything was just in LOUD increments in the front speakers only. I heard NO kind of SWISH or sound running around the 7.1 speakers at all. I was SO disappointed since i heard how HD Master, lossless & dbly True are supposed to be the BEST. Then when i took it off, switched the ps3 to bitstream then put it on thx Neural 7.1, THEN i heard it around the speakers. What gives? Did i do something wrong? Y have a 7.1 surround, or even a 5.1 Surround if u can't hear it SWISH and awe u cause it's only coming out of the front 2 speakers? How can that be the best?

Because you put it on "Direct" which is just the front speakers and sub. If I ever switch my Yamaha receiver to "Direct" the HDMI kicks out.

Don't ever switch it to "Direct" for blu-rays.

You also have another major problem with DTS HD MA and that being that the PS3 cannot decode it so all you get with it is DTS core.

Yeah i know the ps3 cannot decode it but my 905 can decode anything, it's an AMAZING receiver. Even still, i know the ps3 cannot bitstream the HD sound to the receiver so my receiver, which has the capability of decoding the dobly true and HD master, can decode it.......that is why this guy here told me to put the PS3 on linear PCM, then put the receiver on direct and it would throw out the sound through the receiver. What do u kindly suggest so i can get the FULL HD Master/dbly true sound on the 7.1 surround?

I don't have your particular amplifier, but I think that whoever told you that is most definetely wrong here...

I have a Pioneer Elite, and I also set my PS3 to PCM....

However, I do not touch my surround options at all.

When you put your Onkyo on 7.1 THX, all you are doing is telling the amplifier to guesstimate what the other two back channels are supposed to be getting out of them....

I am assuming you are doing this by using some kind of advanced surround option on your remote or reciever, but you should not be doing that at all....

Turn the advanced surround options off, so that your reciever can except the PCM signal as is......

Atleast, like I said, this would be my guess.

I don't mess with my surround options at all, unless I want to listen to music in fake 5.1....

I just tried what u suggested and the 905 has no such settings. The 7.1 was setup on it's own through the Audyssey Auto Calibration based on the amount of speakers i have on it, in this case being the 7.1 setup. IT has MANY sound choice, for ex., dobly EX, Dobly PRO, THX, Dobly Dig. Ex, Neo 6, All Stereo sound, etc.. Any idea which one i should put it on so i can get this master HD sound out? My ps3 is on linear pcm but yeah, this guy here told me to put my receiver on Direct and i will hear the sent sound in HD. Even if i wasn't listening to the back surround speakers that make it 7.1, and just listen to the regular back surround 5.1, i still got nothing out of it. It's CRAZY complicated to get to hear this HD sound. Believe it or not, on the 905, 16 gauge monster cabling, stand and the speakers, cost me 3200 bucks right there and i still can't get this work right where i hear the HD sound on my 7.1 LOLOL. HELPPPPP lol

Yeah i put it on Direct because one of the guys here told me i need to put the ps3 on Linear pcm and it would send out the signal as pcm, then putting the 905 on Direct would allow that signal to go through the 905 without a conversion. Was he wrong? What would u suggest i do so i can get the HD Master or Dbly True HD sound or PCM sound so i can hear it on my 7.1 system? VERY IMPORTANT for me to know, thanks

I have my Onkyo 705 on Direct and it outputs Multi-channel PCM on my blu-rays all the time.

But that's the 705, they are all different. I had the 605 first and now the 875 and 905 and all 3 were different. The 905 doesn't even have the multi channel button or switch like the 605 had the button and the 875 has the switch, this 905 has neither. I had it on direct and only get that 2 channel dolby true, it's crazy. It doesn't say multi channel or anything on it, just direct or pure audio. And pure audio seems to be the ONLY one that shows dolby True HD when i hit the display on the ps3. Direct becomes 2 channel as well. It's crazy as all the ps3 selections are on except for AAC/AA3.

Dr STrange is not coming out at 7.1 at all.

SEPARATE QUESTION: Superman returns on blu ray came out with dolby digital. There was supposed to be a re-release of it with Dolby TRUE HD. Anyone know anything about that?

Also i read the book and the difference between PURE AUDIO and DIRECT, it's not clear or specific. Anyone know exactly what the differences are and benefits/pro's cons?

I'm fairly sure Direct mode does not introduce any additional surround processing by the receiver - it just passes through what it's given. If you are passing linear PCM from the PS3 to your receiver via HDMI (and yours is 1.3a), you will receive sound via all channels.

If your passing 2 channel linear PCM from the PS3 to your receiver via digital optical out, and the receiver is set to "Direct," it will pass it through as 2 channel. This sounds to me like the problem Gravion2005 is having.

Gravion2005, double check your PS3 settings, and make sure you have audio out enabled through your HDMI connection only. This is the only thing I can think of that would cause your problem and be easily corrected.

No i don't have an optical cable. Just 2 HDMI Category 2 1.3A cables. Freakin' HUGE/THICK cables. So thick that it slows down the signal bet. the receiver and the tv. By the time it kicks in when on a video game, u miss the first part of the ending sequence or motion video because u have to wait for the sound to kick in. I wish it didn't do that. I assume that is Normal?

Any info on the superman blu ray? That new one with the dolby true hd as opposed to the reg. d/d for sup. returns?

U what i'm going to do...i'm going to reset the ps3 to it's factory settings then redo it all to see if that might work. I remember my xbox 360 froze or something similar was happening when i had the 605 then when i reset it to factory settings and redid it, it just somehow magically worked right.

...maybe even try to enter the audio settings manually. (instead of selecting "automatic")
