Wasn't this filmed in 16mm? And would that even benefit in 4k? I remember Kevin Smith blasting the Clerks blu ray release and saying it was an unnecessary cash grab for the medium.

Well I can't believe that, if that comes out here it will be one of the first I buy. I'm a bit annoyed that all the films I want are all released in other countries first Ghostbusters 1 and 2 then Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's in Auro 3D and Atmos!

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=287...0&a=1&go=1&l=1 We know that the scan is not newer than 2006. At LEAST, but is probably even older. So how the hell can that be considered "modern"? Here are some differences between old 2K masters and 2K masters that are really modern: http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=...5&l=1&i=0&go=1 http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=229...0&a=1&go=1&l=1 Last edited by I KEEL YOU; 04-07-2016 at 11:40 PM. |

I KEEL YOU, you are comparing a lot more than a 4K scan vs. a 1080p or 2K scan, there's also the issue of encoding, use of post processing filtering (as the non-Criterion disk clearly has plenty of), etc. The old TCSM scan still holds up well to modern 1080p and 2K scans. |

Can we stop throwing out these ludicrous film resolution specs? It absolutely does not, by any meaningful metric (it might take more than 4K to resolve all the gory molecular details of the emulsion, but when you're resolving any additional image detail, who cares?). Not super16 film from 2016, and especially not 16mm film (not a negative in this case - it was shot on color reversal Ektachrome) from 1974.

Hi all, first post here in ages (I don't recall my username during the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format war).
This release is so underrated it creeps me out. As a video enthusiast and physical 16mm collector, I can honestly admit that I didn't expect anything from this release beyond the already beautiful 40th anniversary 4K remastered release on BR. I was under the assumption that 1080p was overkill already, but I'm happy to say that I was wrong. For starters, the film is as I can tell 1.85:1 despite being labeled as 1.78:1. I have only listened to the mono DTS HD Master Audio track as a purist, and came into this thinking only the plethora of modern audio options would be the main difference. I can happily state that I was incorrect. This 4K release has proven to me beyond a reasonable doubt that grain that makes up the image is more than I could have imagined. Are you getting that "4K visual experience"? No. You are getting what appears to be a super high quality clone of 16mm with a digital display. For the nerds out there, there's simply nothing I can't zoom in on and take a photo of that isn't a massive improvement over the downscaled 1080p Blu-Ray release. Is this a must buy? For Texas Chainsaw massacre fans, absoFreakinLutely. This has single handedly proven that 4K is needed to accurately represent the grain(or detail) of 16mm. I do not believe an 8k transfer will ever be needed unless there's some new audio codec that grabs everyone's attention. It's hard to improve upon the original unless you want more channels with a remix. In conclusion, if you're a big fan of TCM this is the ONLY copy to own. If you're just a moderate fan the 40th anniversary BD will do. When I say you can zoom in and see a massive improvement over the BD release, don't you also believe that the complete image your eye is seeing is also improved? That's up to you, but at least you know. This truly feels like I just received an uncirculated copy of tcm on 16mm, which apparently 1080p couldn't pull off. I thought the 1080p 4K was definitive, but I suppose there was room for improvement. I'm actually eating crow on this one because despite resolution, I did ignore the quality itself of the scanned grain because I already thought 1080p transfers were overkill. This has given me a new appreciation for 35mm on 8K when it becomes standard. There may not be a huge difference, but there wil be a difference. Definitely double dip & buy this if you're a fan, or if you like the film but don't own it yet this is the way to go. Any fan that hasn't seen this release & also owns a 4K display is missing out. The film is not riddled with post processing to increase marketability. You know how you can compare good vs bad upscaling? Id say that's about the noticeable difference here. This isn't upscaled though, all original. I applaud Turbine for this release, and I'm very disappointed in Dark Sky for not releasing this American classic in....America. I've done the A/B tests, the difference is there. Texas Chain Saw Massacre, finally available in the best quality possible considering the sources. It may not "Wow" everyone, but you're getting the best I do hope that this release becomes more aware to those in the classic horror community as Turbine has taken a film with with an original 60k budget that was expanded to 130k, and unexpectedly grossed 30 Million. Dark Sky may live in the past, but Turbine has proven that 16mm matters. If you love TCM, don't sell yourself short. Please support this awesome endeavor. Hmm. But it isn't clear if the Dolby Atmos and/or Auro 3D soundtracks will only be on the UHD BD or BD or both.
