Default Best HD reicever

I have the Denon 2807 reicever and think its a great reciever, but now I have blu ray movies and want to get the best sound possbile with the new hd formats. I was looking at the Denon AVR-3808CI. Is there a better hd reicever than this one out there? Im willing to spend $1600, no more than that.

I have both the 905 and 875 onkyo's and i had the 605. Go with the 905 all the way. U can get it around that 1600 dollar price if u shop carefully. I saw it around that price on Videogon. 905 all the way.

Considering the Denon 2807 accepts multi channel PCM, there wouldn't be a big difference by going with a newer receiver. So if your Blu-ray player can convert TrueHD into PCM then it may not be worth the upgrade.

I believe Ive seen 1lakerfan around over on the Playstation boards (correct me if im wrong ) ...which means hes probably using the PS3.

In this case, Downhere's statement is correct...upgrading to the 3808 may not benefit you any better. Your current receiver accepts Multi PCM and is all you need with the PS3.

(but if you do upgrade...like dperron mentioned, I'd pick up the Pioneer-Elite 94TXH)

So in other words, he might get a better sound upgrade by getting a good standalone BD player that decodes DTS HD MA.. oh wait...

yeah, in the meantime he should go out and buy a new receiver because he "might" get a new player too...

good thinking.

(and was only speculation that he has a PS3 in the first place.)

If you really need the best, wait until January 2008 for the Pioneer Elite SC-09TX. I will be getting this around February or March.

Well, if the OP has the PS3 as his Blu-ray player, there is a possibility it will decode DTS MA in the future and send it as PCM, it has the horsepower to do it. In that case a new receiver will definitely be a moot point considering the AVR-2807 accepts multi channel PCM and there would be absolutely no difference with a receiver that has the new codecs since it would still be receiving multi channel PCM.

Now, if the OP is adamant about changing a perfectly good receiver then I third the Pioneer suggestion although you can't go wrong with any of the receivers suggested...except the Sony...stay away from the Sony. Sony doesn't do well with audio, even with their ES line.

MY SETUP

front: Polk RTi10
center: polk CSi5
Surround: Polk FXi5
Sub: Velodyne DLS 400R
receiver: Denon 2807
blu ray: ps3

How do you convert DD HD and DTS HD to LPCM? Does anyone know if my reciever is capable of doing this? How do the HD formats compare to LPCM, because I never heard them. Another reason I want to upgrade is because I heard that the Polk Rti10 speakers are power hungry, so instead of 110W per chan. I will be getting 130W.

I agree with this totally, although I went ahead and did exactly the same thing that the OP is considering. I upgraded from the 2807 to the 3808, but my reason was mainly that I also replaced my PS3 that was in my theater room with a Panny BD30. Since I was going to need another receiver eventually for the PS3 in the living room, I took the plunge and got the 3808 for use with the Panny, and will be leaving the 2807 paired up to the PS3.

The 2807 did an awesome job as you already know, and was only lacking DTS HD Master. The 3808 is also awesome so I guess it comes down to how important DTS HD is to you. The extra HDMI inputs are also very handy. I haven't had a chance to play around with the 3808's network capabilities yet other than to do a firmware update on it when I first got it. You can't go wrong with Denon though

Honestly, you cant go wrong with any of them, Integra has a model in that range also, which is actually and onkyo model with parts comparable to Denon and Pioneer Elite. I would stick with one of those and stay away from the yamaha, they have gone downhill in the last few years compared to other companies.

You should check out the Marantz SR-7002 also, it's right around that price.

I battled back and forth between the Onkyo 805 and the Yamaha RX-V1800. I ended up getting the 805 (roughly the same price at the time) and I'm sooo glad I did. It is nothing short of fantastic and I feel like the build quality is a little better than the yamaha. You really can't go wrong with any of those, but I love my 805
